The short answer: USB 2FA support has only been introduced in Firefox 60. So, don't expect this to get into a working state any time soon (if ever).

The long(er) answer: The stock sailfish browser rendering engine is based on Gecko 45, which is as old as it sounds. Unfortunately, we have only one kind of glue software between the renderer and the touch user interface, which is limited to Gecko backends, and Gecko is no longer under development. Newer versions of Firefox use Quantum as rendering engine. Thus further development of sailfish-browser based on Gecko is a dead end anyway. Firefox 60 (as mentioned above, the first version that supports WebAuthn) is no longer Gecko based, and thus would require a lot of work to be supported on SailfishOS.
