trying to add a train schedule from Zurich public tranport app offers export, but the selection offers mostly andoid apps. Is it possible to download such a .ics file to sailfish calendar? That would be quite handy sometimes. If I select SaifishOS the file disappears somewhere (but not to downloads folder) schedule selection

You can go to settings -> storage -> user storage -> file manager (pulldown menu) -> android_storage. Then you should be able to find the file in the folder where the Android application has stored it. Simply tapping on the .ics file should open it.
Jolla should really make the file browser its own application instead of tucking it away in the settings menu, just like the transfers. These are things that I commonly use and require multiple steps to open them.
Edit: it seems like I misunderstood the question andn that you don't know where the file gets saved. You could try sharing the file to an Android application which allows you to save the file anywhere or in a known location.
that timetable app, when asked to export, asks to point at a app. They better had called the feature open with. It's a bit disappointing to see sailfishOS on that menu and but results. Maybe here is no .ics exported, but text file instea. In export to mail or export to messages, this is the result.

If you download an ics-file, you can import it in the calendar. Open FileBrowser, choose the file, and select open. FileBrowser sends the file to Calendar, and Calendar imports it. But it won't update the file automatically. Haven't tried that with train schedules, though.
The problem of the poster is that the ICS file comes from an Android app.

Download and Downloads in Android storage show nothing neither does Saifish's Downloads, yet the dialog implies Sailfish might be able to handle a .ics download from a android app.
