Hi Jolla, hi SFOS team and community,

I am using an Intex Aqua Fish with the newest SFOS version. I love SFOS but I am missing an update of the Android SDK version on the phone. I know that there are several postings with this topic. But I think Jolla is ignoring these postings. Why?

I would love to use several apps, but I can not use them, because of the SDK Android version. I need the Android 5 version.

Android or Apple devices - I do not want to use them in the future. But I think I have to in the future, this is very, very sad!!!

You apparently bought the wrong device, if i understood it right, Intex dropped the support of Sailfish OS. With an Xperia X, and the recent statements of Jolla, we will get Android 8. I am really looking forward for this post. Lets hope this will happen quite soon :)

I thought that Android 8 will only be available for the Xperia XA2, not the Xperia X?

@dyraig:

Currently: it's definitely only available on Xperia XA2 (because it relies on a Baseport 8).

Eventually: Jolla has been poking the idea of upgrading the Baseport of Xperia X from Baseport 6 to Baseport 8, and backporting the LXC-based aliendalvik to Xperia X. At some point they did a survey to ask if they could finance it through a paid licence renewal. Community members have had some success toying with an attempt Baseport 8.

So might have some chances of happening.

Still, if Android 8 is critical (Hello, banks insist on android apps as 2FA !) I would go for an XA2 right now (I did exactly that, though I had the excuse of needing an urgent phone replacement due to a broken microUSB connector on my X).

There was a hint at Sept 19's community meeting that something might be announced soon. See my edit at the end of https://together.jolla.com/question/211347/please-upgrade-xperia-xs-android-support-from-44-to-81/ or see the whole meeting log here: http://merproject.org/meetings/mer-meeting/2019/mer-meeting.2019-09-19-08.00.log.html (look in particular at the part starting at 08:45:07)

@Firefox84 If you are referring to the statements @pakman linked, your "we will get Android 8" is a very wild speculation. I don't see how you can derive this from the statement. I rather think they will offer some kind of license bonus/free transferral if you buy a newer phone. The X is an old phone and soon the batteries, which are rather difficult to change, will reach the end of their cycle. As a user of the Xperia X myself, I would hope Jolla concentrates on important things like OS improvements or updating apps. Not many problems solve themselves by waiting - the Android update issue does!
