I wonder if some enterprising soul might like to port this to Sailfish?

I use a simple host file from this website http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.htm and it does the job just fine.

On Xperia X I use "Defender" from openrepos. For me it works very well. in AdBlock list Menue I choosed just the last two entries.

Edit: after adding wanted adblock lists pull down pulley menue an choose "update now". It takes a little time. Be patient.

+1 for pointing out Defender, thanks. Now the browser can display a website that just seized up before.

Yeah, I know that there is this app. But it is over 2 years non-updated and maybe abandoned? Will it work after first system update? :D But good app, someone should adopt it.

@Malakay: Yes it works. You can chose from various sources to update your block list. So even though the app hasn't been updated for a while, block lists are up to date.

I downoaded Defender, but it is not obvious to me how to activate the specific lists ... :o

@DrDweeb: Open Defender, click on "Adblock Lists" and enable the list you want by activating the round button on the left. When you have enabled the list (or multiple ones) you use the pulley menu to "Update now". I wouldn't activate to many lists, since a huge host-file can slow down the browser. Select for example Disconnect.me (Tracking and Advertising) or AdAway. That should be enough.

in my opinion there is no necessary to block ads on SFOS - there are none in SFOS apps.and those stupid android app ads I block via Raspberry Pi with Pi-hole DNS blocker in my whole network.

Pi-hole is not a solution when mobile though: when data costs, and is slow when signal is weak.

I use opera mini as a browser, so it block ads itself.plus it is optimized to download less data, so 1,5gb per month is no problem :)

I think system level ad-blocking is an excellent idea.

I notice that the now aging windows phone browser is able to work better at home where my router ad-blocks. Clearly it is ads more than actual page content upsetting the browser.

The SFOS poor and slow browser needs all the help it can get.

The fact is even with a good browser, I see more than 90% of the data is ads social media etc on many sites, making them painfully slow.

Agreed, I would like to know if someday I will live to see Opera port for Saifish OS - that would be DEFINITELY my default browser

I discovered "Kiwi Browser" on the Android store which is Chromium based and has inbuilt ad-blocking. Another porting opportunity ;)

We already have system-level adblocking. It's called "editing your hosts file".

There is Otter browser, an Opera clone, which is even QT, so adapting it to Sailfish OS should not be that difficult. But so far nobody has tried :(

Anybody who would dare to try :P
