Not a question, just some considerations [not a question]

Good afternoon. First of all, i want to say that i'll try to be as polite as possible, but if someone should feel my words rude, i beg his pardon. I use Sailfish on Sony XA2, since early January. I can't say i'm satisfied, not at all. The simply truth is that, as average Joe, i'm disappointed. I decided to stop using Android phone for a while, to test a SFOS phone, because I sympathize with the idea of open source, and I think that's good to have an OS different from iOS/Android. Moreover, Jolla ensures, on his website, that "Sailfish OS is compatible with the Android ecosystem in both application and hardware adaptation levels, i.e. Android apps can be used in Sailfish OS". Well, after eight weeks of regular use, i can say that SFOS is to me a broken dream. I didn't found any revolutionary experience, the Android apps compatibility is often not true (and when true, is not FULLY true!), camera stock app, stock browser and email client are so poor, unworthy for a 2020 OS. More, too many annoying bugs, one for all, the fact that Android apps can't save data on SD memory. The truth is simply that SFOS is not ready to final users, even now is something good for Linux maniacs, programmers, enthusiastic nerds. I sincerly respect them all, their work is precious, but an average user wants something much more different: we want a phone with a fully effective OS, we don't need anything that requires patch over patch to do something that's absolutely basic for an iOS/Android phone. I'm sorry, but privacy, as important as it is, it's not enough, to me, to keep using a phone with SFOS. In few days a will be back on Android, the XA2 will stay into a drawer, and i'll use it every now and then, just to look if something new has come to life. Good bye.
i'm also average joe, came from symbian to sfos and i find android is a broken system with bugs over bugs and the worst ux ever seen in my life. the three weeks i had to use droid before sf x came for my xx were the worst weeks in my smartphone life. but i have to admit: sf 1 ui and ux are superior to nowadays sf but luckily it can be patched a bit even for a tech noob like me

The android support is limited since there is no google services but many things that don't work on stock alien-dalvik can be made to work with micro-G. There is no bluetooth support for android apps and i think that is the biggest caveat.
abc123 ( 2020-02-23 19:57:02 +0200 )editnot rude but maybe a bit naive ? ms failed with windows phone, due to missing apps etc. so now here we have a tiny company with a tiny ecosystem.. ..hmm what can one expect ? a complete os ?
with your expectations i would try an android custom rom i would be realy interested if that can please you.

pawel ( 2020-02-23 21:31:41 +0200 )edit@070966 has his points. Jolla doesn't get the basics straight. He didn't say he wants a full ecosystem. It is browser, mail and camera that have to be halfway up to date until you think about optimizing the remorse timer design, brightness of the pully indicator or the design of the after-call dialogue. People are waiting for those basics for years and it is putting off newbies from the beginning, quite understandably.

I think the surprise is Jolla are still kickin' and alive, their system is useable and fun, and quite a number of people use it and even like it, for many different reasons. Using SailfishOS as a sandbox to run a large collection of Android apps in may not be the major best purpose.
