Apps for video call / conference

What apps work with Sailfish OS (Sony Xperia X) for video calls or conferences?

So far I am using Whatsapp video calls for individuals and it works fairly well. However, I do not like relying on Whatsapp and I haven't found anything that works for larger groups (10+ persons).

Did any of you have success with other apps (like Skype, Hangouts or Zoom)?

Signal almost works... but unfortunately the aspect ratio for the front camera is wrong

Hangouts does not work in my Xperia XA2 with SFOS 3.2.1.20. I just tested it due to curiosity for some time ago.

I have Skype Lite installed in. It works some way now, but it needs testing. I do not know of it's suitability for asa meeting application with many participants simultaneously.

Skype lite works fine (XA2).

Microsoft Teams works great, but its purpose is not for pessonal calls but within an organisation

We should not forget the free and open-source conference system Jitsi. It works with Firefox on XA2 and their app meet.jitsi.org is available on F-Droid and also Google play, a.k.a. Aurora or APKPure. I've successfully testet the F-Droid version on XA2+.

As I read in their website it requires minimum Android 5.0 version, so it will not work in XperiaX

It may be worth trying a web browser. Sailfish's native browser doesn't support Jitsi, not a surprise at all, however Firefox et al may work. It does work on Firefox on XA2, but again it's Android8.

@jollajo I visited two days ago a jit.si meeting using sailfish OS browser, and it asked for the App. I thought I give it a try and follow the .apk link and not the google play. I did the install and it id worked ! On XperiaX, with android version 4.4 .

nas ( 2020-04-09 16:05:24 +0200 )edit

@nas: that's very surprising! When I open jitsi.org in SFOS browser on my Xperia X and tap on "start a call", it opens a new tab for meet.jit.si (same behavior as a desktop browser) -- but this page doesn't get rendered and stays grey. When I do the same with Android Firefox, meet.jit.si renders fine, but the only download link for the Jitsi Android app is Google Play. No direct link to an apk file. Is there anything I missed?

Not an app, but https://peercalls.com/ works fine in Firefox (doesn't work in native browser, but what really does?). It really should work in any modern browser on any platform...

The group size is theroretically unlimited, but as it is using a peer-to-peer aproach, each participant requires an additional upload stream, so at some point bandwidth will become an issue...

If you use it extensively, you should host your own server though, as peercalls.com is run by the developer and paid out of his own pocket...

I've had limited success with Nextcloud Talk app for Android. Videocalling itself works. But since the app uses Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM), part of Google's Play Services, you don't get any notifications. There are open tickets to remedy that, and frankly I wonder why a service touting "private, on premise" even requires this without alternative.

There is a native Talk app, but it talks video calling and I haven't actually tested it yet.

How did you install Nextcloud Talk? The app says it requires Android 5 at least.

Sorry. I've an XA2, thus SFOS X with Android 8.

The native one does only Chat, not video conf. Would need newer Qt. Otherwise the Android app is available on F-Droid (perhaps you find an older version with 4.x support, not sure how good that would be).

Even that is not the answer to the question regarding Xperia X:
I used Skype on the JollaC and tablet and it worked.

Unfortunately this answer does not help the original poster because he uses an Xperia X -> Android 4. Jami needs Android 5.
