I like to do some reading on web sites before falling asleep. Some of those sites that I follow regularly has "night mode" e.g. white-on-black color scheme available but majority don`t. Due the unnecessary bright screen even on lowest setting I would like to be able to select "night mode" on stock browser like for example the Android UC or Dolphin browsers have that turn any web site colors to be light on dark.

EDIT: As mattaustin points out there are Reader Mode on Android version of Firefox. It does excellent job for stripping a clutter and visual distractions away and supports also white-on-black color scheme. I think this is the most obvious way to implement "night mode" for Jolla Sailfish stock browser which uses Gecko -engine like Firefox. We can also use this method (or UC/Dolphin with it's "night mode") as a workaround until stock browser develops further in this area. Also this question is related to browser reader mode which refers to Blackberry implementation.

But, what especially Firefox misses is consistency of implementation - You still need to be exposed to plain and bright non-night-mode web pages when you want to navigate and find new stuff. Firefox Reader Mode/Night Mode also covers only the browser part of user experience.

Jolla/Sailfish manifest to be "Unlike" and this is again one opportunity to stand out of crowd by proper and consistent implementation of "night mode" maybe by utilizing further Ambience -methodology to quickly change (as droll suggest by using some automation with cron/dbus) look and feel of your handset. I changed also this question/feature request to ask Night Mode not only for the browser but hole UX.

EDIT: There are other aspects in the night mode like the silent mode and notifications as https://together.jolla.com/question/10199/idea-for-night-mode-notification/ summarizes.

EDIT. As an alternative for native implementation I have recently settled to Android Firefox browser with "Black background and white text" addon. The combination works well enough to help eye stress when browsing on dark enviroment. I still hope that one day we have native solution available.

EDIT. There are now available Web Pirate browser on the Warehouse repository. Web Pirate has built-in night mode as well as adblocker and support for free text copy making it most feature complete among the native web browsers available to Jolla.

BTW, this Jolla Together site should also implement alternative selectable white-on-black color scheme for night reading.

this could also be something to enable through ambiance or a nightvision toh

Great idea, a simple inversion of all the colours would be highly sufficient and relatively easily implemented. One could of course take it one step further, and induce an inversion system wide. It would be useful, but probably not that easily implemented.

GuSec suggest system wide night mode which I would like too. Currently I always select Old Phone ambience for night because it*s dark reddish color scheme which retains your night vision. Main Jolla apps follow ambiance quite well, Beides the browser the most annohing app to use is Mail, which implement ambience fine until one opens a message and it changes color scheme black-on-white. Mail should implement selected ambience all way down to all states of the app.

Maybe it would be easier to implement 'reader' mode - which is available in Firefox (Android). The Sailfish browser is based on Firefox, so this might already be there behind the scenes?

Here's what it looks like: http://i.i.cbsi.com/cnwk.1d/i/tim/2012/10/09/Firefox_Reader_Mode-tablet_540x852.png
