Hello,

Since 1.0.3.8 apps running in landscape are closed from the long phone edge (top).

Although it might sound like a good idea, as the top is where your eyes are, and not where the screen has physical top, I find it causing more harm than benefit.

First of all, after closing or backgrounding an app, you end up in portrait -only mode, so you might have already started turning the screen to portrait . You don't know if the action will be close or background.

Secondly, not all apps in landscape close along the new behaviour. I believe to have had some problems with Android apps, but I might be wrong.

As a prime example take Fingerterm. Open it up, rotate to landscape, check - long edge closes. Now still in landscape click the bars and select New window. Check the behaviour in nrw window - long edge backgrounds.

I shut down 2 running command sessions because of this. Now I am double-checking if the action now is background or close.

Also, when the phone put in landscape is lying flat, and you just want to background whatever stuff is there, you first need to check which gesture is the right one.

I'd prefer if all gestures are fixed all the time. I'm closing browser by accident every time. long edge should always put background and top edge close. !

Now that I started to look more closely, Fingerterm has swapped behaviour if you hold the phone horizontally while starting even the first instance. It's common for me to minimize the browser which I used in landscape and without rotating start Fingerterm.

I can see that the Camera app doesn't inform about its landscape mode either, so you close it from the side.

it is so annoying, gesture rotation should be an option in settings that needs to be activated and not a default setting, one of the reasons people hate android btw this is someway a duplicate of several others (on the phone so please find your links with searching for gesture rotation and landscape)

This is more like a problem with the whole UI not being yet ready for Landscape. The solution is to.wait all apps and the system UI to become fully orientation compatible (Landscape/Portrait/locked). I think it is consistent to keep the top always where the sky is, no matter how I am holding the phone.

Optionally, this could be made a user setting to make it possible to specify how the gestures behave when the phone is tiurned.

I totally agree. Although I've never been an N9 user, I admit it might be right to keep the top 'where the sky is'. The only way for me to say is to be able to change between behaviours, I'm ok if that's just a conf file without a GUI.

That being said, I don't know why this needs to be a per app setting. If I'm operating a horizontal-only app in landscape, I don't mind closing it from 'the sky'.

I was thinking abt global setting for orientation behaviour and/or selection of the mode. App-specific configuration might be very confusing.. would be hard for me to remember which setting was used for which app..

Partially answered: If you slide your finger from the edge, just look out for the placeholder for that app in the home screen. If it has an arrow and a large 'X' next to it you are about to close the app, so don't take your finger off and swipe back to the edge and then go in from the other edge.

Note: arrow could probably do with being the same way around as the user is swiping, so perhaps this bit is a bug.

There are probably other ways the animations could go to distinguish between closing and minimising apps (eg sliding whilst fading rather than just fading, or perhaps having some zoom-out effect down to the placeholder when minimising to direct the eye to what is happening)...

This is marked as duplicate. Of what? Link is missing. I would still like the idea of having the link in the notification box, would be the simplest way of finding it, imo.

PS. Fingerterm retains portrait mode edge swipe actions if launched in landscape mode but you can easily fix that by turning the phone to portrait mode and then back to landscape mode. After that the edge swipes work like they should i.e. left edge to minimize, top to close.
