Why not just swipe-up (to go to the Events view) instead?

If I'm doing something else, I do want to be notified of (for example) incoming messages, but I don't want it to stay there. (Similar to why I'm really pleased with "having" to peek, if I want to know the current battery status, etc. - I don't want that information "in my face" all the time, just when it's necessary.)

By the way, I don't think any other smartphone "leaves the notification on screen".
Yes, for example Android leaves an icon up in the notification field, but still not "the whole message".

'drop down notification'..? are we talking abt the notification area at the top of the active screen that shows all sort of things happening in the phone, like incoming msgs, downloads, loe-battery state, etc.. If we are, I too would like specify the time it stays there.. Now the notification disappears so quickly that I hardly ever am able to read it - so I always have to go feeds to check what it was (and all notifications are not there). So, configurable time and more clearly discernable outlook (not the same as current color-theme) would be much better..

That's exactly what I mean the notification disappears to quickly. Especially is say your waiting on an authentication text for say whatsapp, Dropbox etc

@BarryB Right, so is ok to you that we edit the question title to reflrct this, so that it concerns not only the 'new message' notifications but rather all types of notifications in the top line of active screen that they disappear too quickly ?

I really just don't know how those notifications are supposed to be called (to differentiate them from notifications that only appear in the Events screen)?
