Hi all!

How is your experiencie with voice quaility during a calls? I must say that in my case the sound quality is not good.

Updated on 07.03.2014:

A summary here:

  • Seems that moving the phone (just slightly changing its position, while keeping the bottom mic close to my mouth) during a call can cause a significant drop in the sound quality/volume (on the interlocutor side).
  • Some interlocutors reported to me that they completly couldn't hear me when I say something while they are talking. At the same time I can hear them.
  • I did some mic tests using CSD tool and results vary. Sometimes the sound recorded is loud and clear, sometimes silent. Test procedure I did:

    a) start CSD tool

    b) phone in vertical position, start Audio Below Mic test, record sound, play it - it's loud and clear.

    c) phone in vertical position, start Audio Below Mic test, record sound, change phone position to horizontal, play it - voulme is loud then becomes low! seems that the top mic is used instead of the bottom one

    d) phone in vertical position, start Audio Below Mic test, record sound, play it - volume keeps to be low, and I can't get the sound volume as it was in b. Pressing the cover close to the led as it was suggested in comments doesn't help.

I was not able to do much tests with blueetooth head set. Just tried it twice and: 1. the sound was good, 2. in second case there was an issue with talking in the same time - the interlocutor was not able to understand anything while we were talking in the same time.

The above was originally reported as: 1. Interlocutors quite often report to me that they can't hear/understand me. Seems that I have to take care to have the phone really close to my mouth. Moving the phone few centimeters away from my mouth causes a significant drop in the sound volume (on the interlocutor side). I did some tests and while some phone positions (distances) don't make any difference in sound quality, when I use Xperia phone the same positions make a big negative difference in a call volume when I use Jolla. 2. Sometimes, during a call i stop hearing my interlocutor for a short while (0,5 second), and it repeats during a call 3. Some callers reported to me that they completly can't hear me when I say something while they are talking. At the same time I can hear them.

Additional info: It's a hard to debug, dynamic issue:

  1. the problem is reported by others (few different people) so it's hard to say what they (don't) hear,
  2. sometimes there's no problem, the sound is perfect (as they say),
  3. I try to find a pattern, did some test calls and there were no problems. During other calls the problem was significant. My general feeling is that I have to take care about the phone position (close to my mouth) but even then I'm sometimes informed that an interlocutor doesn't hear me. It's not my first phone and I had never such issues with any other phone.

Is it a microphone problem, Jolla's "feature"? I also wonder if it might be caused by specific mic location in the bottom of the phone (it's so easy to cover it with a finger) and/or a very directional mic (when the phone is 90deg position - top by the ear, bottom by the nose then the sound is a disaster - interlocutor hears almost nothing. Xperia has no problem in this and other positions.)

Used it in several networks (home and roaming) to do local and international calls. I have a subscription with Swisscom and was calling from Switzerland (home) and Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany and France (roaming). I never had any problems with voice quality whatsoever. IMHO, the Jolla phone does an excellent job here. Call duration is usually up to 20 mins.

@restless_being: You could try a bluetooth headset/earpiece or something to do a few test calls. If the other party can hear you better, then there is maybe a problem with the microphone of your device.

I'm a heavy user (lot's of calls, usually long duration), but no issue so far. I rather say the call quality is really good. Try what was proposed by @Venty, you might have some hw issue.

For me it is slightly different - often I can not hear the other side properly - the sound volume is too low.

So yeah, this needs to be fixed ASAP as it is the primary function of the device - a phone being a phone.. :)

I can hear the interlocutor clear and loud. The problem is that interlocutor experience poor call quality depending on how you keep the phone in your hand and how far from your mouth. Sometime I just move the phone from right ear to left ear and interlocutor report to me that he is no more hearing me. This is because when I keep the phone in the right hand the microphone - which is on the bottom right side - is closer to my mouth, while when in my left hand I keep the microphone slightly far from mouth. This indicate me a microphone with poor off axis response.

I have a problem with cracking noise in my receiver since the phone fell down from my table. This is really awful during a phone call :( I think something broke but is there no way for an easy repairing?
