Since many are receiving their Jolla from their friends in Europe and they are living in middle east countries with different fonts like Arabic, Urdu, Persian etc. It would be nice to have them added as keyboard or an input just to be able to receive/reply messages. Thanks

I'm working on a layout for Persian. As soon as I get my jolla device I'll try it and share the links with you. It will be my honor to create Arabic and Urdu layouts as well.

Thanks a lot. I am looking forward to it and I hope you will get your Jolla soon.

I don't use any of these languages but i upvoted because i think the localisation should be a priority in sailfish os.

I have created an Arabic layout QML file. It's still missing some bits and pieces (accents, empty buttons when you press shift, I need to use the Arabic numbers instead of the hindi ones) but otherwose it works.

There is another issue for fonts.

I attached the file I have there http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p=1405478&postcount=90

Thank you MSameer. But in the .conf file, How can the name= be set to "العربية" instead of "Arabic". As only ANSI is supported, not Unicode?

User ( 2014-02-08 23:26:08 +0300 )edit

You can set it to "العربية" if you want. I just decided to use "Arabic" :)

UTF-8 should be fine (not sure).

The Hebrew layout by Schturman is called "עברית" so other then general RTL-display flakyness (which returned in full force in 1.1.4.x) you should have no problem using "العربية"...

MSameer did you adjust for the new keyboard interface yet?

For Sailfish OS 1.1.4+

Since @tmi doesn't update the packages, I made RPM packages from the scratch to keep them updated:

(Please visit the links to OpenRepos to see more details and the screenshots.)

For older versions:

I have created some keyboard layouts for Sailfish OS, including Persian, Arabic, and Esperanto. I don't know how to build an RPM package yet, so you have to install them by yourself.

Jolla Sailfish Persian

Jolla Sailfish Arabic (Update: smaller Backspace for bigger character keys)

Jolla Sailfish Urdu

Jolla Sailfish Esperanto

First of all, you need to enable Developer Mode which automatically installs Terminal on your device and to set a root password.

After you download the archive, extract it and copy both QML and CONF files to: /usr/share/maliit/plugins/com/jolla/layouts/. For example, if it's in your Downloads folder, enter:

cd Downloads
tar -xf fa.tar.gz
devel-su cp fa.{conf,qml} /usr/share/maliit/plugins/com/jolla/layouts

(Replace fa with the file name, ar, ur, or eo, in the commands above).

Then, enter the following command to add the layout to Text Input settings:

systemctl --user restart maliit-server.service

There's a bug in the Arabic font, Amiri, which causes ARABIC TATWEEL (U0640) not to be displayed correctly. Note that empty keys are not really empty, but non-printable characters, such as ZERO WIDTH NON JOINER, LRM and RLM.

On my Jolla the Persian keyboard is not working any more after update to 1.1.4. Reinstallation doesnt solve the problem: I can choose Farsi in the settings and it appears after long-pressing the space-bar, but i cant see any characters.

Any solutions for that?

edit: the "Persian Keyboard" app by tmi available in warehouse is the solution. Thanx for that!!

Thanks for that. But as much I know we cant even read Arabic/Urdu languages in messages. Means if we get a message in Arabic, it is unreadable. What would be the solution for that?

Saqib Iqbal ( 2013-12-27 07:50:38 +0300 )edit

temporary solution in the comments here
