I would like to have an option in the calendar pulley menu to not only "go to today", but to jump quickly to any date. By selecting this option, the user is prompted to enter the date he wishes to navigate to, with todays date as a default. This could then replace the "go to today" option.

@fiat1100d, to check which day a specific date is you could easily use e.g. cal 26 12 1969 to see it was a Friday this day 50 years ago.
@ljo: Although I've immediately realised to type that command into a console, other users might not see that as you didn't mention it. Some even doesn't have Developer mode activated, so don't have the terminal app. But anyway I gave you an upvote for this nice hint.

Seconded, though I'd like to keep Go to today as separate option.
For now, you can change year from the dropdown list and from there you're six swipes away from the month you need.
