A Threema port would be nice. At the moment (after Facebook bought WhatsApp) in Germany it looks like Threema is the favorite alternative (in the press) to WhatsApp. Telegram isn't an alternative for me, because I don't trust an russian company more as an US company. Threema is lokated in swizerland. That sounds a little bit better. I know it's not opensource, but that's ok for me. WhatsApp wasn't either.

Telegram is based in Berlin, your home country. Quote from the Telegram FAQ: "Telegram is not connected to Russia – legally or physically. Telegram's HQ is in Berlin."
Let's not start to make another native app that might get take down requests in a few months or become dead because of protocol changes that can't be reverse-engineered. Telegram has an open API and encourages people to create alternative apps.
And here in the Netherlands Telegram seems to become the most popular after WhatsApp.

peter-berlin ( 2014-02-23 16:02:59 +0300 )editi managed to install threema directly from their website and it works great. i intalled the barcode scanner from Fdroid and the verification of QR signatures works great. i really like threema , but im having trouble getting my friends to jump on the wagon. most are non thechies and they have to do stuff not needed for the WA installation. it's sad, but i don't think this great app will get the momentum it needs. the devs should at least have a free demo, so that users at least give it a shot.
shfit ( 2014-02-23 16:52:33 +0300 )edit@tokaru welk yes , i also really like threema. it is very polished and easy to install. what i meant , is that with WhatsApp its just pushing the install and you're good to go. with threema you have to generate a key by randomly swiping, synchronization only works if your friends enter their phone number or mail, you cannot change your profile picture inside the app, you cannot add users to a chat, you cannot add friends manually using their names/phone numbers etc. its fine for me, because i understand a thing or two about cryptography and communication systems, and i understand why many of these things were implemented this way, but my non tech savvy friends just get annoyed from these differences.

is this still accurate in 2019? I use J1 and someone i like to get to know better uses whatsapp and threema. I would prefer delta chat or riot - but as i don't wannt to start the messenger conversation with someon i barely know of those two i'd prefer threema.
So does threema still work with polling (buying from their shop, not playstore) and the scan+use via browser is still possible?

At the moment the Android client works well, but it's better to have an native client. You can buy and download the apk from the manufacturers website (the installation direct from Google Play does not work for me), but it's important to install gapps, because Threema needs GCM for push notifications. For QR you have to install Barcode Scanner from ZXing Team.

skull77 ( 2014-02-22 18:33:23 +0300 )editwell, you are right, but WhatsApp uses XMPP as far as I know, which is an open protocol, and it has no end to end encryption. To build a native client for Sailfish, we would need to know how to exchange data with the threema server, wich is hard to do, since we do not know what protocol to use and how to properly encrypt the data.
