How do I keep maps centered on my position ? [answered]

This weekend I had to drive a fair distance in an area unknown to me. I used Maps to calculate a route, which it quickly calculated and drew on the map.

But when I started driving i discovered that the 'you are here' dot moved on (and off) the map, but the map remained stationary, which meant that I had to manually move the map now and then. Not a great feature in city traffic!

So how can I lock my position to the centre of the screen, and let the map move ?

Another feature I would love, would be to have the map rotate so the direction of movement always was up on the screen.

I would also like the map to follow position, but please make the rotate-thing optional! I always loose my sense of where I am on a map when it starts turning around instead of having north pointing up!

Will long-tap anywhere on the map work? It sets view to the center of the map, but I'm not sure if it locks it there.

00prometheus : Yes of course it should be an option, it's not always appropriate.

trminator: No, long-tap only centres the map then and there, the same as a short-tap.

I wonder if the dark dot in the lower right corner should have been a centre lock function, but as far as I can see, it has no function what so ever.

I had this problem at first as well and then the map started following the dot i.e. keeping my current location centered on the map at all times. I've no idea what I may have done to cause that but I first noticed it when I had the GPS application minimized - the cover view was keeping track of my location.

I tapped the black dot in the lower right corner several times but all it ever seemed to do was center the map on the area directly under the dot.

What annoys me more, though, is the screen turning off while navigating. I can't keep long-pressing the screen every few minutes (because tap and swipe are no good there) while driving. If the map is in fullscreen it should override any screen saver timers. Imo.

This is exactly what the dot in the lower right hand corner does. It centres on your currently location and enables tracking. Tracking will be disabled if you subsequently interact with the map (including panning, searching etc). Zooming itself doesn't enable tracking but you do need to be careful not to pan while zooming. After interacting with the map touch the dot to re-enable tracking.

This doesn't work. For me, the dot does nothing (except centers the map to the point under the dot, just like tapping anywhere else on the map).

That is a known issue that has been fixed and will part of the next update.

That's what I was also experiencing but it's actually because the dot is very small and it's very difficult to click on it. But it works if you hit it. Good to know that it will work more easily soon, thanks.

The trick seems to be that you're not supposed to hit the dot precisely with the tip of your finger but rather lay your thumb flat in that general area. That way it works. :) Well, good to know it will be made easier soon.

By only tapping the little dot in lower right corner zooms into that point and displays that address - just like you'd tap anywhere else on the screen. However if you press and hold the little circle then it will locate your current position, zooms in (or out ..) to a good distance and starts tracking untill you decide to move, pan, or do any other action.

So press and hold the little circle at the lower right corner to start tracking.

You don't have to press the circle, you can do it from everywhere!

Correct, long press anywhere on the screen will zoom to a good distance, and start tracking. I don't know why it didn't work when I tried yesterday, but now it works perfectly. I consider this question as answered and closed. Thanks, Kim.
