It's nice to see that google talk status is integrated in the people/message application.

However, many of my contacts use skype i.s.o. google talk. It would be nice if you could add your skype account to Settings -> Accounts, and then have the same integration as google talk.

so sad that there is currently no native Sailfish VOIP apps(like SKype) in Jolla Store, and Jolla only recommends using Android VOIP apps, why cannot they do the similar thing as what Coderus is doing with Mitakuuluu(proprietary protocol whatsapp client)?

I fully agree if you would like users switch from windowsphone/android to sailfish without loose theirs contacts of skype and/or don't want Android app. I was bought Jolla with Sailfish for native app not for Android app otherwise i would just take an Android phone. I can buy for few money skype for sailfish or a clone compatible skype on jolla store if exist.

microsoft said that new strategy is about to be everywhere, all platforms, giving to users all for 'free' and making money on +services. from this point of view jolla is another platform where they can make money from paid calls, show more ads..... i dont personaly need skype, having enought calls by phone, so why put more wood into fire :D

native skype could be attractive for tonz of customers wich are thinking about Jolla but they still waiting for more features such a skype or some poker without android support installed, as you not bringing your ex on dinner to meet your new love, somebody doesnt want to invite his exdroid into the Jolla :)

Skype is a proprietary protocol that requires a license from Microsoft. Right now, since Jolla is a really small company, Skype integration, like what has been done on the N9, is not likely to happen. Jolla needs to have a license, and it is unlikely that Microsoft will sell one to them.

However, you can install Skype for Android, if you really need Skype.

Hmm, on this skype web page: https://support.skype.com/en/faq/FA214/what-is-the-desktop-api

the following is mentioned: "Using the public API: Use of the Desktop API is free for commercial and non-commercial application development, assuming you abide by the terms of the API Terms of Use."

However on the same page they mention that due to 'technical improvements' part of the interface will be retired later this year:

quote: "some features of the API will stop working with Skype for desktop. For example, delivery of chat messages using the API will cease to work."

So it would not be wise to add support for Skype until it is clear if they are going to offer an alternative.

The webpage you are pointing is about Skype desktop client, that is distributed by skype and only compatible with Windows, Linux and Mac, the Linux version requiring Qt 4 and X11. Moreover, they are only compiled for x86, so they won't even work on the Jolla.

Winfried: Microsoft have not real web API. Exist only desktop backend API. Skype binary blob must be installed on x86 PC. All linux frontends (KTP in KDE, etc.) are connected through installed binary blob Skype client. ARM blob with "API" not exist.

another workaround solution would be to install skype for linux on a server and the skype-bitlbee plugin, and then connect to skype on that server using an IRC client…

Also, since Microsoft took over Skype and removed all the supernodes thereby for all intents and purposes removed the security away from Skype - who on earth would like to use Skype for anything useful any longer? Nokia used to include a default SIP capability, and cSip is readily available albeit the security could be improved. There are also better security capabilities with H.323 based videoconferencing nowadays since Skype got mangled.

sorry, can you tell a bit more information on the service you are using on Jolla as an alternative to Skype for Audio/video calls over internet? thanks.

User ( 2014-06-08 19:16:39 +0300 )edit

There were an inquiry about support for webRTC some time ago. WebRTC would allow to use services like appear.in in order to make video calls. The service runs in browser and allows max 8 person video chat simultaneously. You need to have webRTC support for browser.

You said it. In my social circle everyone gave up Skype a long time ago, especially serious people who care about confidentiality of what they say (like businessmen etc). I've just logged into my account out of curiosity and the only online contact out of ~250 was echo123.

New Post: I made a accounts plugin (mostly using coderus existing code for icq) to support skypeweb with telepathy-haze. My repo contains all neededp packages. Just install haze-accounts-extensions-skypeweb.

Old Post: There's a Libpurple Plugin for Skype using Skypeweb that could be usable on Sailfish via Telepathy-Gabble, I'm using it on Arch Linux with KDE Telepathy already and it works very good, except status and image recieving.

Works well, thanks a lot.

I recently found a purple plugin for Facebook chat, maybe you can port it as well? :) https://github.com/jgeboski/purple-facebook

I could but I don't know if it fully works. Telepathy-Haze is limited

@till You can configure Facebook chat using XMPP

I thought the XMPP service was shut down some weeks ago. At least for Pidgin I now need the mentioned plugin

I don't know if this means something, but if you look closly you can see a skype notification on this picture of the new jolla tablet, but without the logo of the android app. [Secret leak...] https://images.indiegogo.com/file_attachments/1025187/files/20141118003058-single_tablet_events_view.gif?1416299458

Good catch. But that could still be an Android-app notification. If I run Skype on my Jolla (as an open multitasking window) and miss a call, I get the same notification in "notification-view". Unfortunately Skype Android app doesn't work very well (yet) - see here:  https://together.jolla.com/question/13330/feature-request-separate-earphone-speaker-phone-sound-in-android-apps-voip-skype-etc/

molan ( 2014-12-02 18:54:32 +0300 )edit

But isn' there only the skype-logo when you're using the android app?

The results from the Jolla Tablet User Experience Questionnaire” in January 2015 reveals that Skype is third most used app, used by 90% of users. So there would appear be a real need of native Sailfish handling of Skype. And maybe, the release of SFOS2 will bring some news in this matter?
