there's fdisk, cfdisk, sfdisk, and parted available from mer-tools...

but, the mmcblk0 device is actually GPT table, and the parted doesn't actually work well with GPT tables...

a parted rebuild with working GPT support would be nice, but maybe gdisk is better suited for the task.

(i'll note that the git repos i found for parted on mer, doesn't actually contain commits... it seems some repositories aren't actually synced from old yet?)

on mer, i found a howto for adding new packages, so i'm gonna go and try this out for gdisk...

We are not adding partition tools in the device as it can easily cause a non-recoverable brick that even care flasher cannot recover (some versions of sfdisk can brick the device even if you dont save your changes). We don't want to start shipping devices back to the factory for factory reflash.

So in short, be very carefull when playing with partiotion tools. You have been warned :)

i may be mistaken, but iinm some of those are actually installed by default (or devmode). in any case, i'm perfectly fine with dropping sfdisk/cfdisk or whatever...

i'd just like gdisk to be available in mer-tools repository, so that i can actually partition the µSD on-device in GPT.

I mean, i can do the work for mer and add gdisk and such, but you guys will need to rebuild for sailfishos anyway...

(plus the parted looks like it's not working properly; it's saying mmcblk0 is broken partition table, while it isn't broken at all)

@jgr @rainisto i may not have been clear as to what i mean, but i don't think this qualifies as definitive answer.

there are a lot of tools that can break partitions easily, eg: fdisk,cfdisk,sfdisk,parted, etc... available by default or via mer-tools...

the funny part is that none of those support GPT which is actually what is used on the device.

what i'm saying is that gptfdisk (which provides gdisk,cgdisk,sgdisk (like fdisk does, but for GPT suppor)) could be added in the same way as fdisk is. if only to be able to partition the 64GB µSD's properly, (iinm exfat works on GPT only)

Secondly, since i am doing some work on this, this is not really a question answer thing, but also a reminder of work that i personally need to do.

Ok, so you are not asking to have gdisk included in the ex-factory Sailfish? Then rainisto did not give an answer: I removed my comment.

@jgr i can't remember what was installed as default, but i'd just like the relevant commands to be available just like the fdisk commands are...

how should i say this... openrepos is too open... i don't trust any stuff on it, (no offense meant)

in any case, i've built gdisk in my local chroot ( gptfdisk as it's called upstream) and it all worked perfectly...
