(EDIT March 21) Feature request: How about open up the possibility to create Sailfish UI SKIN packages for download and install? Maybe even combined with ambience and ringtones? This way users can decide the fonts, colors, etc they prefer. And this will also take the work load off Jolla devs.

(EDITED March 18) I think some of the changes make the UI uglier for my own personal taste. I really love the subtle UI style the way it was. The old pulley bar was just the right size and the cross when closing the app looking slick and "unlike". I'd like to have the design back. The "colorfulness" of this update also makes some elements in the UI looking like Windows Phone, which I don't like. I like that the ambience picture will "last a bit longer" and thicker letters in the keyboard (but now it's just bigger instead of thicker...). It's a pity to lose the ambience color on the keys. Basically for me personally most of the "accessibility" improvements for those who wanted larger fonts, larger interface elements, more contrasts etc seem to be screaming to my face.

So can we have it back if we prefer the old look? As an option in phone setting, for example something like "Jolla Classic" and "Whatever-you-like-to-call-the-new-one"?

EDIT: March 07 2014 10:32 I want to clarify that I'm only asking it to be optional, since we all have naturally different taste. I'm commenting based on the confirmed features in photos and version number here: http://www.allboutn9.info/2014/02/sailfish-os-1041-ohijarvi-whats-new.html?m=1#more and hoping it' not too late to do something about it :)

EDIT: March 07 2014 20:00 So I'm editing again the question to make it clearer: I was clear from the beginning that it was my own opinion and taste. I am NOT "complaining already" before the release. It doesn't really matter whether it concerns only this imminent update or any future update plans. My question is: Is it possible to make certain changes optional? Will it be reversible if, god forbid, I prefer the old look than the new one?

i agree with the keyboard colours not following the ambience. however, i think the cross for closing the app was made bigger to improve usability (easier to tap).

Yeah, they should have kept the ambiance on the keyboard. Btw: Isn't the new official update 1.0.4.3?

IMHO, before we complain about details, we should just wait for the roll-out of this update.

In my opinion, these UI changes look really good. But we should wait until the update is installed on our Jollas to see how it looks and feels in real.

I believe more text contrast is needed in some context, like keyboard, text messages and favourite contacts, in some casesit's really barely readable (depending on the color scheme used by ambience, I'm using moonship and contrast is really low)

This is really too generic for us to be able to act on. I think it would be more beneficial to see seperate topics opened on any specific issues you have, rather than lumping them together into one un-actionable pile.

Back on topic, we cannot (and should not) add preferences for every single thing we ever change, doing so leads to a worse user experience for you, more testing load (= slower pace of work) for us, and is generally the worst possible option when faced with something that is divisive or unpopular.

Instead, it's best to find out why something is unpopular and work on fixing it or removing it altogether.

We all know that design(be it UI) is up to one's taste. So every design change will be liked by some and disliked by others. In this given case I can tell that for first time after getting my Jolla I enjoy pulling it out of my pocket and looking at the screen and UI. I now at last can show it say it is beautiful UI. Readability is greatly improved - previously the device was pain to use in sunlight even with brightness to max. Only pulley glow bar is to thick for my liking.

I don't mean every single thing. This request only concerns the "skin": Better contrast may be good for using under the sun now, but too high for indoor use/darker hours. The new size of the pulley bar and the glowing dots in navigation are now so big and shiny that it makes the screen appear flat in colors (light leak), especially areas closer to these elements. I also prefer the old look for app covers and the app-closing cross, and without the lock-icon when I swipe down to lock the phone (so it just turned black). So basically while @zlatko finds the new look more beautiful, others including me really love the original subtle, minimalistic/Nordic design. It was elegant. And we don't find it difficult to use.

@spacenewt I am totally with you that it is matter of taste and preferences. And I understand how hard it is to keep everyone happy. May be a better user control over ambiances is the answer here? Also I think light sensor needs to control the backlight in wider stretch, allowing it to go very low(even lower than the current min setting) thus being easy on the eyes when the ambient light is dim or it is just dark.

PS. Don't get me wrong - I understand your point of view.

@zlatko, yes that's what I try to say. We all have different tastes but at least we have the good taste to prefer Jolla ;). Ambience control is a good idea. And I don't think we need to control every single detail, but something like "UI skin" packages will be enough for the everyday person. And maybe this is something that can be opened up so we can help out and take the work load off Jolla developers.

@zlatko, BTW, we've found out how to make the pulley bar thinner (like before). Follow the link below. :)

So this is the awnser, can someone click on solved, please?!

TomTomGalore ( 2014-03-22 10:46:40 +0200 )edit

@TomTomGalore, I think this doesn't solve the question as it's a feature-request for easy "ui skin packages", and the linked question presents workarounds only.

Hi there, let's seperate it a little bit. The worst thing for me, since the update, is the bolt fonts on keyboard. I liked the slimmer version more. And was it always that fat in horizontal mode? I can't read what I've written in Mitäkuuluu.

So please make the keyboard a little bit skynnier again. Thanks.

Did you check the workaround? It's posted there how to get the font size back to previous version (a qml file for maliit)

spacenewt ( 2014-03-22 16:27:13 +0200 )edit

LOL .. i was doing oposite - i was change fonts to be a little thick .. for better readability ..

I was post to web some versions about VKB for both orientations :

  • New Large definition with my_thick and original_thin font.

  • Old Medium definition with my_thick and original_thin font.

PS: I am not understand unreadability with bigger fonts in keyboard. App font is not depend on VKB font size. Some picture from Mitaakuulu ??
