UPDATE: This issue happens only when you have any number of unread messages from more than one different contact.

I don't know if this is a bug, but if not then it looks to me that it is an inconsistency with other parts of UI.

When messages of a single contact are opened in the Messaging app and minimized to home screen, if you tap the cover within 5 seconds the same screen appears (with the same messages) but if you tap the cover after a period of 5 seconds then the appearing screen is the screen with the list of contacts and their last messages (not the same screen when app was minimized to cover).

It seems to me that there is no such behaviour with other apps and their covers and that with other apps after tapping the cover it shows always the same screen as it was when it was minimized. I guess this should be also the case with the Messaging app.

I can not reproduce this... Even when I have the app open the whole day, it stays on the page, where I left the app...

@ejjoman 1. Open the Messaging app (a screen with latest contacts and their latest message is dislayed) 2. Tap on one of the messages (now a screen with all messages from and to this contact is displayed) 3. Swype to minimize to home screen 4. Wait for more than 5 seconds 5. Tap the cover 6. The appearing screen is the one from number 1. and it should be the screen from number 2. (the one that was opened when the app was minimized to home screen).

That's exactly what I did. For me, the correct page appears every time (the page with all messages from one contact). Even when I close the messaging app, it shows this page at next launch.

@ejjoman Thank you for your comments. After trying with different things I found out that it happens only when you have unread messages.

Ah, okay... Then I will check it again when I receive a message the next time.

As I found out and wrote in the update of the question, this happens only if you have unread messages (from at least two different contacts). To reproduce this if you don't have unread messages from more than one contact:

  1. You have to receive two messages from different contacts and not open them (either do nothing with the notifications in notification screen or clear notifications with pulley menu). NOTE: If you have unread messages from just one contact, opening the messaging app will open automatically the screen with the messages from this contact and they will no longer be unread. If you have unread messages from more than one contact, opening the messaging app will open the screen with contacts and their last messages.
  2. Open the messaging app (the screen with contacts and their last messages appears).
  3. Tap the message of a contact that has no unread messages and stay on that screen then minimize to cover (to home screen).
  4. Wait for more than 5 seconds and tap the messaging app cover to open messaging app. The app does not open the screen that was opened when minimized but the one with contacts and their last messages.

Now that I know what the problem is, I still think that the app should behave in the same way no matter if they are or they aren't unread messages.

Under these circumstances, I think it's the normal behavior. It makes sense to me, that the app shows that there are unread messages from different contacts. But then again, I can understand that this behavior can lead to confusion.

I had two messages, I opened the first, went to home-screen, tapped within 5 seconds, got back to the message (I think), repeat, tapped not within 5 seconds, got to the next unread message that was shown on the cover. That does sound confusing but is actually pretty cool.

It seems to be more like a inconsistency that the cover does show unread messages but does not open it when tapped AND if you were not on reading an unread msg previously.

This can be pretty odd sometimes so it might be better to have it not do that at all or do it at all times.
