(I would have edited my comment but there is no option to add an image.)
Better contrast is also needed with Jolla provided Ambience images not only user-generated Ambiences.
I have tried some of them and also others and generated a PNG file showing a comination of WLAN status messages with different Ambiences:
Ambience WLAN status messages
As you can see the very high color saturated backgrounds reduce the readability a lot.
And the very thin text font color is not black but uses the same hue value as the background with a luminance value of around 50% (range 0-100% as tested with color picker from GIMP).
The background colors use luminance values of around 90%. Thats why the contrast is not so good (40% out of 100%).
You should view the PNG file on your Jolla. It has native resolution of 540x960 extracted from screenshots.
And if you try the grey version you will see the low contrast very clear. Please keep in mind that some people suffer from color blindness.
You also need high contrast in sunlight. Increasing the brightness (background led light) doesn't help much.
I would suggest to have also an Ambience contrast switch (low/normal/high) or so in settings.
Also the information or error messages at the top are not easy to read. The background color is saturated and the font color is black with a thin font. I have tested different ambience settings/images. I realy like the ambience styling, but readability should be the first goal. For me readability gets more and more important as I am getting older ;-(

axaq ( 2014-01-24 03:49:32 +0200 )editMy full support for this. Perhaps one of the problems is that there might not be very much sunlight in Finland :p But I really have signifficant trouble reading anything from the display on an average direct sunlight here. That and bold, high contrast letters option - my full support!!
