[OPTION] Threaded view in mail app

asked 2013-12-24 18:14:50 +0300

Please implement the possibility to view email messages by conversation/thread in the stock mail app. I kinda expected this, should be default by now in any mail client.

Close this quetion and merge the request at Enhancements of the email client?

It depends on who you ask this to, some would think it's not a good idea ;)

Please don't merge everything in one, we can't implement everything at the same time, limits the voting and is harder to report progress/close.

I suppose this is a matter of preference, and on how you use your inbox, but I would really benefit from a threaded message list.

Actually, given the limitations of the ListView, some means to make the initial list short is needed. One way is threading, if you have, say an average of 3 messages per thread, you get a list that is much shorter.

My preference when tapping on a "thread" item would be to open the message view, but with each message shown in chronological order, with all the messages that have been read collapsed by default.

While I'm a fanatic mutt user, the N9 email app does threading well for smaller screens, e.g. threads with new mails appear at the top. Please copy that :)

N9 sometimes messed up threads, splitting conversation that shouldn't have been splitted etc. So copy but also improve. :P

Threading should be done both on In-Reply-To and if that is missing on Subject. That's how e.g. Kmail does it.

Then there's the time when there's a in-reply-to header, but the subject is completely different, because the sender wanted to address the same persons and just selected "reply" to a message and then wrote a entirely new message with a different topic. Those should not be threaded.

Those people should be taught that replying to a mail isn't the same as writing a new one. In my not-so-humble opinion ;)

Otherwise you cannot adjust the subject of a thread without breaking the threading.

We're thinking about it :)

This really is a necessity in a modern mail client, IMHO. Please think long and hard before deciding against it :)

And perhaps stop thinking and jfdi ;)

Any news on this?

I confirm it's a must have!! Should be an option, like on the N9 - not anyone wants it.
