Your inbox gets a new message for any comment made on a question you have been involved with. Sometimes, I make a change in a question I am not interested in enough to wish to follow (perhaps retagging it, or something like that). However, I can't find a way of stopping the notifications about comments for a particular question. How do I do it?

There is a button on the right-hand side of the screen which states Follow or Following depending on if you are following the question or not, try click it :)

I have. These are questions I am not following, merely have made a contribution to. I tried toggling the "Following" button anyway, to see if there was a bug or something that I could shake loose, but no effect.

Have you checked the profile => subscribtions by re-thinking the combinations of your existing settings might help?

The questions aren't even in my 'followed questions' list!

For the email notifications one solution might be to set in your subscription settings the 'Answered by me' option to 'no email'.

Then you can use the 'Follow' button to follow just those questions you are interested in.

Note that currently the 'daily' and 'weekly' options in subscriptions do not work (i.e. they are the same as 'no email'), but we will try to get the daily and weekly digest enabled soon.

I don't think this is about emails (at least the word "mail" does not appear anywhere in the question). Personally, I do not receive any emails from TJC at all (which is what I want), but whenever I visit, there's the red envelope icon on top of the page, highlighting "responses" to anything I previously took part in. It would be great to be able to turn this off for specific questions.

I see. Somehow I directly connected notifications with the email notifications. But these are indeed two different things and the subscription settings only apply to email notifications.

Thanks @tokaru, that is exactly what I meant! :-)

For the notifications in t.j.c inbox there currently isn't any kind of filtering mechanism.

Adding a simple "Ignore this question"-button should be fairly simple, but how should that work?

  • Just suppress all notifications from that question?
  • What about mentions? If someone specifically mentions you, it probably is something you want to get notified about, even if you have ignored the question
  • Should the ignore also apply to comments added to your answer?
  • And probably many more small details to consider...

So share your opinions in the comments. I'll also make this a wiki answer so we can collect desired functionality here together.

I agree, it's a tricky thing :) Well, the tooltip says "you have x new responses". I'd be consequent with that and only notify about entries that are actually a response:

  • an answer to my question
  • a comment on my answer
  • anything mentioning me with the @ prefix

While an edit to a question I commented on and subsequent comments might be interesting, I would not consider them something I should get notified about by the red envelope, as they are not explicitly directed at me. I suggest that these do not trigger the red envelope, but are still listed on the page the envelope takes me to when you click it. So you could still have a look into these potentially interesting items, but are not prompted to do so. For me, this would be perfect, no need for an "ignore" option.

That sounds about right for me too. Another option would be a set of tick-boxes, like the ones for mail at various intervals, but for types of notification triggers instead.
