my external speakers don't make anymore sound. happened before in the past and after multiple reboots it returned. i tried removing battery for 5 minutes - still no help.

CSD command line tool tested - external speakers producing no audio at all.

android apps, gallery video, youtube, etc - no sound. but earpiece is working fine.

hardware or software issue? anyone else having this problem?

There have been some mentions of faulty speakers or speakers spontaneously dying. Most probably yours is defective as well. Check https://together.jolla.com/question/36572/no-sound-headphones-work-somewhat/ and https://together.jolla.com/question/30942/intermittent-sound-problems-from-speaker/

As an addition: You could try the procedure described in: http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?s=dd3d26029f09ea2d667e272120d62797&p=1417639&postcount=3

thanks @rod. didn't try that but thanks for the link. however, when i restarted pulse audio, i did see errors about permission problems and the errors were referring to /run/user/100000/pulse

i discharged the battery and left the phone turned off for 4 hours (slept through the night). woke up, charged it, and audio is now working as expected again.

my conclusion? it's not a hardware problem!

I am facing exactly the same issue for 3 days now. I try to kill and restart pulseaudio, reset factory, leave the battery out for the night ... Sound is still not return. As the sound disapear like magic, I guess and hope this is a software issue. Will try your discharged battery solution but I think that leaving the battery out should have done the same... Can anybody help to check once and for all if this is soft or hard issue?

i left the battery in the phone till it went down to 0% and let it turn off by itself. left it for 4 hours. i don't think that would make a difference in your case since you removed the battery for the night. have you checked that talk.maemo.org link to see if /run/user/100000/pulse has the correct owner?

As my phone only has 5% of battery left, I will try anyway but let's say I am pretty pessimistic. I have already try the fix owner for pulse but that doesn't change anything. I think this is not solving the exac same issue. Will let know how it goes after the battery discharging...

Hi, juste to give the info to anyone else facing the same issue. Here's what worked for me: - reset factory - re-install of White Snow TOH application

It was just that, after the reset factory I only installed the Poppy LE TOH and sound was not working during 1 week. Today, I decided to install the white snow TOH and... it worked. So, this issue is a software issue and CSD tool doesn't mean anything (in this case).

None of the above worked for me. I tried the following: Close all apps and remove the battery (without turning phone off before). The problem appeared after using latest Android Skype (video calling).
