Today I stumbled upon this bug here: https://together.jolla.com/question/36697/missed-calendar-alarm-event-does-nothing/

While I was in the calendar, I found some curiosities in the calendar app:

image description

  • mark (to)day as current date in recent month. What should I expect when I tap on that day? Will it open March 18th or April 18th?
  • show name of every month, please
  • put "today" in some button or something else

I think the cakendar UI is neither intuitive nor informative. The main view only shows the day numbers. For anything else, you need to swype or tap.

I also miss the overview that gives me the week in a glance. And the go to the next week with a swipe.

Maybe I'm missing something, but it's not the best calendar ui I've seen.

In addition, the main view shows the next events, but they may actually be from different days. There should be a visual difference between items from two days. Perhaps a line with a date stamp.

Sadly I agree that the current calendar ui is pretty poor. OK I might remember what day of the week it is but not even to display that at the top of the screen if just daft. I know the idea is to keep things as plain and simple as possible but this has taken it too far - either improve the richness of the display or allow the Android app "Cal" to work/recognise calendars on the device!!

Seems 'Today' is already in the Pulley Menu.

My additional suggestions would be:

  • I really would like to have additional 'Agenda View' instead of the daily view, or the calendar view. That would list the events in chronological order - daily view is to sparse, and calendar view is too dense.
  • Changing year in the main view is long tap on the date, instead from Pulley Menu like in 'Create Event' window. That confusing. I'd prefer change year always in the Pulley Menu (it's faster to access).
  • It seems the selected day is pretty formatted. But it misses the year in case I'm doing next years schedule.

Fully agree that there is need for improvement! This naked grid of numbers meets maybe some graphical design goals, but is not very practical! I can not accept to peek to get basic info. It's also easy to mix up the today-mark with the day-details-mark. Suggestions: The name of the currently displayed month should be shown as a bold headline, week numbers permanently in the leftmost column. Saturday / Sunday (or other days, depending on country) and maybe public holidays should get another special appearance like bold, framed, red or whatever. This makes the position of the weekdays easier to identify, without naming them. I suggest to not switch the month if you tap to see details of a day of a neighbouring month. Maybe I just want to browse within one week spanning two months. If I want to switch the month, I would do it myself.

I have the same opinion. Imporvement are a must. Everything is more or less intergated, think it is possible to change that easily. Why I have to use the pulley menu to see the days, and today I see it is today ;-) but not the month. Yes I know with month we have at the moment but from my point of view all the information have to be directly visible ...

One option is missing for me:

To choose e.g. every first Sunday or every third Tuesday etc.

Only possible to choose every week or every month, but we have meetings every first Monday in a month (this can be the 1st or the 3rd etc.)

And to add more calendars are missing too.

Compared to manual calendars, Jolla's calendar has no information about national holidays. They are essential for to your future plans.

(I have tried to import them from Google without success. Still better if Google calendar is not needed.)

There are lots of sources for all kinds of event collections in vcal form. No need for a special holiday feature, IMHO, just the ability to import a vcal file in general (and optionally give everything from a particular file a named category).

  • Today's date is marked by a separate color digit in the monthly overview.
    • Highlighting is used to indicate the currently marked date, but that isn't today's date.
  • There is a pulley menu option to go to "Today".
  • By peeking to the side (pull a little bit sideways), you see the month name and week numbers.
  • Peek from the top to see week days (first entry of pulley menu)

Today's date is marked as you can see but when I swipe to march the date "18" is marked exactly in the same way. Why must I peak somewhere to see the name of the month? There is an inconsistency between how last month and this month is shown to the user. Wouldn't it be nicer if I simply could see the name of the month for every month in the same position?

hardcodes.de ( 2014-04-18 17:01:50 +0300 )edit

March 18 is marked because some day has to be marked, Marking a day does not mean that it is Today's date. Today's date is indicated by the color of the number, not by the highlighting.

You always peek to see the current month, always works, no inconsistency. All you need to do is get aquainted with it and the inconsistency will vanish.

00prometheus ( 2014-04-18 18:11:30 +0300 )edit

Some day has to be marked is no valid explanation to me. If color of the number is the attribute to differ between today and any other day, then please have a look at the image I've provided. Color is almost the same. 18th of April is just a touch bolder.

You always peek to see the current month, always works, no inconsistency. I don't get that! Look at the image. I flipped one month back and can see that it's March. If I have to flip, slide, touch tap or whatever to get that info in the current month in contrary to all other months, then it is inconsistent. By the way: getting name of day, month and current date should somehow be basic features of a calendar.

I have explained to the best of my ability. If you still don't understand, I can do no more than apologise for my insufficiency.

It's totally OK if you have another opinion than me, so we got different ones. From my point of view you answered the question "how is that thing to use?", which I never asked.

I made a suggestion, which is the polite form of me saying the UI is fundamentally flawed, Jolla - please fix that!

I'd be happy if I had the choice to disable the calendar alarm popup, as requested here: https://together.jolla.com/question/40952/feature-req-add-option-to-disable-calendar-reminder-popup/ I can either chose to have an entry without alarm or with an alarm but then anybody starring at my phone lying on the desk can see the title of my reminder. Why?
