Without a doubt, moderators and administrators must have permission to delete anything posted in here. What about normal users? Should they be able to delete postings? And if yes, which postings?

To keep this poll representative, please only vote for a single answer. Feel free to add other answers to vote on, and discuss in the comments.

Note: I am aware that this topic has been sideline-discussed in the comments of different questions as a consequence of deletion accidents / incidents. But AFAIK it has never been discussed with focus or voted on.

Regardless of who can delete things, there should always be a confirmation dialog when deleting anything, to prevent accidental (and un-cancelable) deletions. I once deleted an answer by another user without ever noticing I did it – accidentally clicked on "delete", I guess.

As there are no more votes, I think we can close this poll. The result is: the majority of TJC users does not care at all. Feel free to reopen in case the discussion pops up again.

Users should only be able to delete their own questions/answers/comments.

I prefer this option. Although I would prevent deletion of questions/answers/comments that have been upvoted a bunch of times.

This place must be kept clean and sometimes it is necessary to delete a post. Anyway, to prevent misuse and allow to reverse unjustified deletions, I suggest to have a "graveyard" to keep a trail of those posts. Could be a filter or separate section. Furthermore, only relatively mature users with a high karma should have the right for such a drastic measure.

Users should be able to delete anything, but only if they have a minimum karma.

Thats how it works now, right? Thats how 'together' works, and should work, in my opinion.

It's enabling sensible people to work together and to help organise the plattform with only a very thin hierarchy.

PyroDevil ( 2014-04-28 18:21:16 +0200 )edit

Yes, that's how it currently works. I think the minimum karma for deleting things is 200.

tokaru ( 2014-04-28 21:36:31 +0200 )edit

And what is wrong with it?

Are there a lot cases where users abuse their power to deliberately delete good questions and answers?

I liked the trust they put into the users (and me) and that made me trust them more...

PyroDevil ( 2014-04-29 00:20:09 +0200 )edit

It enables "sensible people to work together", sure. Unfortunately it leaves the door wide open for more or less anyone to come in and deface the site. "Are there a lot cases where users abuse their power?" A lot? No, but it only takes one bad apple - one malevolent or vindictive user - with the patience to build up the karma requirement to cause possibly untold damage

In my opinion "Restricting everyone out of fear that someone could do something bad." is not a rule I like to life to. There are too many restictions on me just because someone else did something bad already. Now adding restrictions just because someone else could do something bad?

But I do understand the need to roll back actions people mistakenly or on purpose have done wrong. A system like wikipedia would be great.

Oh and actions of a 'bad apple' can currently be reversed by database rollback, I think.
