From the gpodder.org: "The gPodder 4 QML UI is not at all complete yet, but basic subscribing, downloading and playback works already. Stay tuned!" so the final version is in the works. But I guess @thp would appreciate some feedback, testing and contributions from power users. Otherwise probably he wouldn't put up those instructions at wiki.

It is their website, so it is at least the right source. If this UI is stable enough, no idea. I am still waiting on @thp to put it into Jolla Store.
My personal judgment is: yes, it is safe, but your experience may vary.
At the moment WE ARE the early adopters, so it is OUR job to test the software before it gets into hands, that will not be able to cope with mishaps.

the wiki would need some update, zypper is not installed by default, it's better to use ssu and pkcon to do the steps mentioned.
