According to comments and some thoughts about that, here are my new suggestions to this topic:

  1. Add generic icons, we could choose from (see system icons that comes with every installation of Windows/KDE/...) ==> @Larswad

  2. Allow to use an icon, provided by an App that this folder contains (maybe with fallback to another or generic icon, when this App is removed from this folder)

  3. Allow to show / hide a counter, that indicates how many apps a folder contains (for them, who need it) ==> @KRM

Generic Icon categories - an illustrative list below

  1. Games
  2. Programming
  3. Multimedia
  4. System Tools
  5. Utilities
  6. Social

Original post:

I think, it would be nice, if a folder would show the icon of the first app in this folder, that represents the folder's contents. So it would be much clearer, what the folder is for and we don't need to read the name of the folder to know, what is inside.

For example, we could use the icon of Tweetian or Facebook for a folder named "Social".

Maybe there could be rendered a little folder icon on top of the App's icon to clarify that this is a folder.

The N900 had a huge icon library in the system, not very detailed ones but they were good enough. I'd like a browse for icon feature in that case. Your proposal is not bad at all, it could actually be the default choice.

We can change the icon-shape by typing it, when we are in the folder, with different shapes. But if we could change the folders icon would be of course better.

@TK: Yes, I know that :) but the shape of the icon does not really tell me, what is inside of it. Especially when I rearrange my Apps, the names of the Apps (and also of the folders) disappear, which makes it also harder to guess, which is the correct folder.

Actually, I like the available shapes which show the count of apps inside. However creating a new folder could automatically choose a different shape, as long an not all shapes are used up. ... but you are right, it does not tell you what exactly is inside.

Maybe it would be better, when the icons of the containing Apps would additionally appear in the icon-select view, so we could either select an icon-shape, or an icon of an App.

Would be great if it was possible to add your own icons for use with folders, or if folder icons could be included in ambiances.

Moth, they're good those folder-icons, but I absolutely love the creamy ones you've made for different apps. It would be really nice with a folder-icon set based on the creamy style.

@Larswad Ah, puppet-style... would you prefer categories or just shapes/colours like the stock folder-icons?

I would like the idea of a themes manager where you could import/install additional icons and change on demand, maybe also letting you change behavior of folder icons (colour, shown numbers etc.).

Of course, such a themes manager should only be an optional, additional feature (i.e. app) to keep freedom of choice.
