Ahoy,

We need community help with moderation here in together.jolla.com, the Sailfish OS Developers mailing list, and #sailfishOSchannel on Freenode IRC. Idea is to have both Jolla sailors and community members as moderators to make decisions (when needed) together. So, please volunteer or nominate fellow community member as moderator by sending email to developer-care@jolla.com. Mail should contain at least nominated person's nick (for IRC) or email address (for mailing list) and where this person is nominated. Example: devel@devel.org for ML, devel for IRC. We will collect nominations and arrange a voting.

NOTE: For TJC, the process is a bit different. There is already a call for moderators earlier this year in this post. Let's continue using this for nominations and voting.

Take a look at the community guidelines draft and add your comments here if you don't have access to the Mer project wiki.

Regarding the responsibilities of a moderator/channel op, it is generally to make sure the community guidelines are followed, to issue warnings when necessary, and in the case of TJC, you'll have in addition the tools to keep the posts organized (more info here). We can provide a backchannel for discussions between moderators if the need arises.

If you are already fairly active in some channel (TJC/IRC/ML), being a moderator should not take up much more of your time. By being slightly more attentive and taking little steps in making the community work more harmoniously and efficiently together, you will probably even help save everyone's time in certain cases!

Let the nominations begin!

Best regards from the community committee,

Carol, Iekku and Eric.

UPDATE: Please submit your nominations by June 30, 2014, so we can get things going. Thanks!

I took the liberty to make this more official. We are really looking forward getting all hands on deck :)

For IRC and ML it is common to ask people who are around and reliable to be asked by staff if they do mind taking over such a position. Volunteers are always welcome but may leave a mess as they change behaviour when having a hat on. my 2c (PS I don't mind being added to #sailfishos list too, I read the ML just for interest what is going on, but does the develML need moderation?)

@chemist: I think that beyond the moderation aspect and its related tasks that the volunteers or nominees would take, the idea is to actually empower our community and make sure it's visible to anyone. Another part of the story is to enable synergy between channels that are typically clustered. The intention to allow developer - non developer interaction is at the core of this exercise :)

Do we actually need mods in TJC. Is pretty civil i think and stuff like closing of duplicates etc is handled pretty good.

@ApB: I think we do as some of the tasks like comment/answer conversion requires moderators rights. And we also think it is good measure to empower our community members with these rights/tools :)
