This post is a wiki. Anyone with karma >75 is welcome to improve it.
The problem is really irritating during calls when the sound quality and volume drops dramatically as this switch from 4G;3G to 2G occurs. It happens in more than 90% of my calls and can appear in the first few minutes, it also never goes back to 3G after that. This should be addressed, if possible. It's a phone after all.

This decision is up to the network operator not the handset. The handset follow strict orders from the basestation. It is common for an operator to push calls in the GSM band to save 3G frequencies for mobile data for the use of other people in the cell. For example I made a call with my Nokia E51, I was in the 3G network and after the call I was using 2G. If you don't want to get pushed in the 2G band you need to set your Jolla to 3G only https://openrepos.net/content/coderusofono/patch-more-network-modes
