maybe a stupidish question ...

but i try ...

why don't we have a virtual linux machine as android alien dalvik in sailfish os ?

i explain : i was so surprise with n900 that has a virtual linux env that lets you use ALL Open stuff...open office...wireshark....

so lets see you just buy a jolla for making unlike calls and have a different system or ....

using softwares you use as a power linux user ...just legal hacks....

that's a idea for just using a lots of stuff 'open' and gain a lot of users...

maybe a sailfish specialist could consider this ...

sorry for question i'm curioush

@mvdm: You need to take another good look at what you have in your hands.

Android dalvik? It can be installed by default => store => Jolla apps => android support

For some of the other stuff you can run it natively: https://together.jolla.com/question/44496/tcpdump-traceroute-wireshark/

You have a full Linux machine on your phone. So in theory you could run whatever you want on it if you can get it (and its dependencies that are not on the phone) compiled.

it is very easy to create a chroot environment, but more tricky to get the X window system up on the device. I created a chroot environment for Kali linux. It is fully working, but accesd is commandline (no GUI) , ssh, or (With LXDE) by VNC connection to device. A tar.gz image can be found on my mega.co.nz . It contains the chroot environment and shell scripts to start/stop the chroot env. https://mega.co.nz/#!go0XBAzS!NNw7q1apSQ4rGBvJPlddfndCcgt1ry-mW5kFsVNazdU

@Nieldk so you think we can expect more useable linux softwares in the future ?, X window like to be complicated. As linux user i use a lot of and it would be great to have those on jolla working (examples : clementine as mediaplayer, gthumb as image viewer ....)

maybe a jolla specialist could also answer this ...

Thanks for your work and share...

Is there a place where we can add apps to be develop in the future ...

While a chroot environment enables the option for running more applications available for a certain distrubution. We are still dependent on a GUI for apps like openoffice and other X based applications. Of course, many commanline apps are available and will work - out of the box -. So, until someone manage to create a good working VPN client, we are dependent on accessing the X window system (like LXDE/KDE/Gnome etc) using VPN from a client (PC). I did compile krdc-vnc-qtonly for Sailfish, but this is really not usable due to not fully scaling the screen. But, using VPN from a PC to the phone running distros in a chroot environment, will enable you to use those graphical apps. For those wanting to try and create their own chroot images, I have released debootstrap which enable you to create Debian/Ubuntu/Kali etc environments. https://openrepos.net/content/nieldk/debootstrap

@Nieldk How can I install a Desktop Linux system with the referenced debootstrap App? Could you give a brief guide? I have Installed debootstrap on my Sailfish developer device an could not see it. I think deboostrap is just a terminal app or library, isn't it?

Uding debbootstrap is "medium" easy ;) For a how-to, look here https://debian-administration.org/article/426/Installing_new_Debian_systems_with_debootstrap

thanks for answer can we hope a sailfish native support for it ?

You mean something like a gui? If yes someone has to make it. Apart from that there is a problem with performance. If i understand it correctly it emulates a x86 processor and runs the guest OS on it so i don't think its fast.

has someone tested qemu ? would it work with a xubuntu, i use xubuntu because it's light

What about docker (http://www.docker.io)? This does not need too much ressources and is quite flexible (and it is running on ARM)
