When phone is in flight mode, you can still enable positioning (or location, GPS) but it does not work, i.e. unable to acquire location.

Should the toggle be grayed out like wifi/mobile comms are when in flight mode, or should it work?

Well it won't get any assistance data, so it will take ages to get a lock. At least 15-20min in good conditions outside. Which would definitely look as if it was not working.

Switching to flightmode turns positioning off, but if i had application using location on while doing this, and immediately turned positioning back on, it took only 15 secs to reacquire location.

Support for using GPS in flight mode was first released in update 5. Acquisition time may be quite slow as no assistance data is every injected in this mode.

Mind:

in order for GPS-Positioning in flight mode to work, one needs to go to settings > positioning and re-enable it - otherwise it will not turn on by itself when an application requests it.

Took me a while to figure this out. Hope it is useful to others as well.
