High Power Consumption

My Jolla used to have a power consumption problem (over and above the old the NFC power problem), burning through battery at about 10% per hour. This fixed itself at around about update 3 or 4, and has been behaving properly since then.

However, since the recent bash etc hotfix, it seems to be misbehaving again. If alien dalvik is running (even though no Android apps themselves are running) the battery is burning 20% per hour.

I suspect this may only be coincidental (as I can't see how the fix patch would cause such a problem), but is anyone else experiencing anything similar, and if so have they found a fix (outside of killing alien dalvik, which is what I currently do)?

Do you have any android app installed that runs a background service that might cause this issue ?

Maybe you could download an Android app to observe all the running processes (CPU, memory usage) to find out what is sucking away your battery.

Without additional app you can use Sailfish Terminal (needs activated developer mode) and type "top". Now use your phone in landscape mode to see more and you should be able to see all of it. Adjust font if necessary and use "q" (=quit) and again "top".

Maybe you find out something this way...

Even if no Android apps are running, there may be "services" of Android apps running/spying in the background. Remember, Google is an advertisement company and you're not the customer but the product. ;) So that behavior is common with Android. In the end it only helps to identify and uninstall the culprit that possibly phones home (wherever that is).

No Android background service running that I'm aware of.

Nothing obvious from top or powertop

Android performance monitors just show "System" constantly running the CPU at about 50%, all other tasks shown at 0%

it seems, that after last hotfix there is some kind of battery drain. I have not tested it thoughly yet, but the battery gets empty at the evening where it was previously 40% full. I need to investigate it further.

I experience considerably higher power consumption every time I've used the WLAN-hotspot function, even after I've turned it off. Turning the phone off, wait a while, and turn it on again helps and brings power consumption back to normal.

Use "Kill Dalvik" to stop any android app service you see running (with Crest).

As stated in the original post, I already kill the dalvik service, and was asking if anyone had a less brutal solution.

Android apps need a lot of memory/power to start up. Another, very different attempt to solve your problem:

Take out your Jolla battery and check the 3 golden connectors for any metal corrosion. It would look like a layer of dust on top of the contacts (you might no see it until you clean it).
Clean the connectors with something appropriate, e.g a piece of smooth cloth and a piece of plastic, toothpick or similar (used with the cloth to clean out the corners). Maybe even a cotton-swap could do the job. Just make sure you don't scratch anything (don't use any metal!).
In my case I could clean away quiet a bit of that matt layer and make those contacts all shiny again.

--> Afterwards my phone felt extremely faster (feels like a new device!), battery life improved a lot and no random crashing of Android apps, reboots or similar.

So maybe that helps you as well - even if our Jolla phones didn't have the same symptoms to begin with.

As implied in my original post, there is no problem whatsoever with power consumption if I don't run Alien Dalvik For example today, I've burned through 13% of the battery in 8 hours, so less than 2% an hour, which is the terrific battery consumption I'd grown used to before this problem suddenly cropped up.

Yes I realized that in your original post. Like said, I had similar issues with Android apps - but not as extrem as you have them + mainly when they were running in foreground. Whenever the battery doesn't perfectly connect to the phone, voltage drops (which in my case often happend while using Android apps cause they used a lot of power within short time) caused the battery to go crazy. I had to use KillDroid app quiet often (even after I closed all my open Android apps), now not anymore at all.

Since (power-)top comment didn't show any irregular activities, I really don't know what could be wrong with your phone. I probably would just delete Android support, clean it out the system and reinstall everything. But of course we won't find the problem this way.

@Basil - Thanks for the link to kimmoli's great entry. Unfortunately I didn't take any pictures before I cleaned the metal contact (will do it when it happens again). But they looked extremely matt instead of shiny. Added your link to my answer.
