Hi - Firstly, thanks for the wonderful product. Have a clarification on the default set of applications installed in the device. As per this news article, the below applications are available and I don't see them installed in my mobile (purchased through snapdeal.com)

"At the launch event, the company claimed that the Jolla smartphone will come with very few preloaded apps, though the unit we tried out had popular apps such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, WhatsApp, Angry Birds, Zomato, Bollywood Hungama, and ESPN Cricinfo already installed."

I am keen to have them installed. I couldn't find these in store, so presume it must be Android. Just wanted to know confirm that these are Android apps and not native Jolla apps? Also, any one here has tried ESPN Cricinfo? We Indians, are huge cricket fans, so would love to have this to follow score updates.

Update : Since my initial query on default application got resolved am thinking if we can turn this into useful post and use it for discussions pertaining to India specific news / discussion points.

I strongly believe, the stock product needs to be customized / localized a bit to make it more useful in regions that it is offered. For instance, installing Indian regional fonts (Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, malayalam, etc) by default would indeed be useful. keyboard layouts could be optional.

Also, will be good to approach some top Indian banks (ICICI, SBI, etc) to see if they can host their apps (native or Android) in Jolla store?

Also, at least Jolla could ask Snapdeal to develop a native e-commerce application for Jolla store. It will be a win-win situation for Jolla and Snapdeal?

Sounds more like the NDTV review unit had those apps pre-installed.

My phone came with just the basic OS, and I installed whatever I needed from the Jolla Store and have kept the dependency on Android apps to the bare minimum.

@SanjayMehya - Thanks, that must have been the case. I think, its fine - users can install the required applications from the store. Just wanted to know what others got while purchased from India

Actually as the apk of ICICI bank is checking the no. so the same is not working with jolla as it fails during the mobile no. verification process. It seems that android apps do not have access to verify the mobile no.

You can download the Hindi Keyboard & Malayalam Keyboard from openrepos. It also installs required fonts.

I am working on putting together other Indian fonts & keyboards. Will release soon.

Uploaded Indian Language Fonts RPM and Tamil Keyboard. Enjoy. Let me know if any issues.

Ok, I will make Tamil & Telugu keyboards in the next week or so and update here.

Please request here if interested for any other Indian languages.

Hello AbyZThomas, I would like Tamil keyboard and font support. Currently am seeing only boxes :(

I use TSITS Tamil Keyboard in my N9 but would like one in Jolla as this is my primary phone now.

There are native apps available for Facebook (Friends, can be found in the Store), Twitter (Tweetian, can be found in the Store), and Whatsapp (Mitäkuuluu, can be found on OpenRepos: https://openrepos.net/content/coderus/mitakuuluu). The other apps are currently only available as Android apps.

Thanks guys...Have installed Mitakulu, tweetian, warehouse, earlier. As it was mentioned as default, was wondering if the other Android apps are native / tested by team. I shall test them myself. :-)

I'm using the following Android apps heavily.

Skype: works well for messaging, haven't tried voice or video.

Telegram: works, no problem.

Dropbox: works, no problem.

1Password: works, but can not cut/paste across Android to Sailfish apps, which makes it useless.

Opera Mini: hangs once in a while.

Bluefire: works, but gesture based brightness control does not work.

Nokia Here Maps: works, but you have to start Sailfish Maps first to wake up the GPS.

Google Maps: work, but phone heats up.

I am unable to view my contacts on WhatsApp..Tried installing Mitakuuluu; however, seems to be some problem with verification. Also checked the openrepos website where it has stopped working overnight. I guess it is not an official Whatsapp client Has any one had success with viewing their contacts in WhatsApp?

Mitakuuluu users are getting banned by Whatsapp. See the comments at openrepos.

You can install Hindi and Malayalam keyboards from openrepos so those annoying boxes disappear and fonts appear. Well some native official fonts for Indian languages should be available.

@AbyZThomas : Can you check the hindi fonts are not properly getting installed after the latest update to Äijänpäivänjärvi. See some screen shots : http://postimg.org/image/75dy3kjdr and http://postimg.org/image/4q3p069lr. From the terminal, whenever I install the rpm, the phone gets rebooted. Request you to please check & update! thanks, ~rohit.

The best thing with Jolla is its a proper GNU/Linux device unlike any others. This means it uses the same system like Debian , ubuntu or fedora. So even the font system should be same.

Install all Indic fonts on your desktop system using #apt-get install ttf-indic-fonts
All fonts will now be located at /usr/share/fonts/truetype
use SCP to copy the entire folder from desktop to Jolla

3.1 As a normal user I copied to /home/nemo

3.2 As a root on Jolla is copied them from home to /usr/share/fonts/
1. fc-cache updates font cache ( guess its automatic)

The best thing is I needn't even restart , I just checked some websites for telugu and hindi and both worked :)

Agree, but some localization will help novice users and encourage wider adoption of device. Thanks for sharing the steps. Is it possible for you to generate *.rpm package and upload in openrepos? Will be useful. I am not scared of terminal but haven't tried anything with devel-su yet although developer mode is enabled.
