Lots of "Connection errors" while on Wlan/WiFi [released]

After the latest update my Jolla give me quite frequently "connection error" messages, especially on wifi, that may or may not mean that connection is actually lost/impossible (sometimes the wifi indicator is blank with an exclamation mark in it, but connection is still working). This makes some apps to go a little nuts however, mail, whatsapp, ecc. Browser usually works good, and sometimes also fixes the "connection error" i.e. the wifi range indicator goes to its actual level and apps start to work again flawlessly.

My AP works good with all my devices, and worked good with Jolla too, up to now.

It's very hard to predict how/when this will occur, and to understand what may cause it. Is it only for me? I point this out just in case, it may be an actual issue.

I also have this issue. Mostly it will occur after being outside of wlan range for a while. And when it occurs I need sometimes to disable-enble to get it work. Also I think this issue causes problems to applications like Mitäkuuluu (whatsapp).

Yes, your comment applies to me too. I'm also using Mitäkuuluu (but in this case there may also be an issue with the app itself, the developer is aware of it and working on a fix).

had the same issue... left home (and the wifi) and got frequent connection errors... i wasn't able to do anything cause the errors almost stalled the phone (very laggy) until i closed all running apps... saw that mobile data was off, activated it and the errors were gone...

For me it happens also with mobile data on.

This is a known issue and will be fixed in a future update.

how far are we from the fix? the phone becomes unusable and I am unreachable when I am at work My phone try connecting the university wifi eduroam and it switch off 3G permanently while in the campus. That's bad, i have to change the sim to my old N9 if i dont want to miss important text or phone calls while I am at work. Reboot doesnt fix it, neither turning off Wifi. I have to leave the campus several miles to reconnect to the network. That's weird. A temporary workaround to fix it anybody?

In addition to wifi this also happens with mobile data, it seems that at least IP default route is often lost. Sometimes this cannot even be fixed by resetting WiFi or cellular data, but instead the whole phone must be rebooted.

Any news concerning the fix?

@richhanz et al

I wouldn't call 1.0.4.20 a significant improvement regarding WiFi, at least now I can connect to public hotspots now and then, but that's all.

On my Jolla

  • Network crashes at least once per day telling me it cannot find any WiFi network, although there are 10 WiFi networks present (Developers are writing own Apps to reset network, while Jolla is not able to provide a working WiFi - what an irony ...)
  • WiFi networks are now and then marked "connected" while traffic is flowing through 3G
  • WiFi networks are now and then marked "secure" in the known networks list while they are definitely open public hotspots, have been used as such and were never marked "secure"
  • Jolla tells me "sorry, cannot connect" to newly found WiFi networks which are properly working, have been used before with Jolla and have several mobile devices connected at that time
  • now and then it does not connect automatically at all, if several known networks are present
  • up until now it does not support 802.1x, not even with EAP-TLS (which probably every third class cheap phone can ...) so Jolla cannot be used in enterprise WiFi environments.

I'm working in WiFi business and we're using/testing/supporting every type of device you can think of popping up in a public, unencrypted WiFi hotspot, but I haven't seen such a poor WiFi implementation in the last 10 years ....

Don't misunderstand me, I love this phone and I'm patiently waiting for improvements and apps I miss, but not having such a very basic function as WiFi available in a properly working way just drives me crazy ...

On my side i noticed that it does not do any traffic with my hotspot(laptop) if i leave it for some time. The network shows up connected in settings. It works after disable/enable. But for now it is a big improvement for me. I didn't get the blank list of wifi anymore and i didn't use the wifi reset not once nor rebooted the phone because of the wifi.

Hmm I have been running WPA2 Enterprise networks with Jolla already on earlier versions? What do you mean by it does not support 802.1X, no UI, have to use developer mode? I agree that Jolla's WiFi is worse than ZTE Blade v1 WiFi several years back and annoyed that so much effort are dedicated to UI fixes instead of ensuring network works all the time.

Attempting to connect to a 802.1x network results in "Sorry, could not connect to selected network" ...

I have noticed a lot more disconnects since the march update

Interesting problem: some apps can use the wifi but not all of them! I am connecting at work via a wifi hotspot with username/password. Yesterday, first time I used that hotspot, it worked fine (I entered the right credentials). Today, it did not ask for credentials, it connected to the hotspot, then the icon got a ! At the end, the browser is working nicely and is clearly connected via wifi (i have no sim in the phone yet) but not the rest of apps (jolla store, android apps, maps..etc)

In the mean time, you can try the app called wlan-reset on Openrepos, a tool made by Schturman based on richhanz's instructions, here :

https://openrepos.net/content/schturman/wlan-reset

I had the problem these past days in an hotel and this tool did the trick.

After I installed the latest version of Mitäkuuluu (0.2-2), most of my problems with wifi and mobile connectivity are actually gone. So maybe the problem lots of people (including me) talked about here is at least partially caused by older versions of Mitäkuuluu. Would be interesting to hear other opinions!

I haven't installed Mitäkuuluu ...

Dang, would have been too easy...

I have 1.0.5.16 and having very similar issues as before. To close out some of the previously mentioned cases: the phone is put on a table, not moving. wlan is present and used by other devices as well, gps, mobile data are off. While browsing, data reception stops, app using internet receives no data suddenly. Disabling and reconnecting to ap often helps, but sometimes gives 'problem with connection'. in these cases a longer wait before reconnecting helps. the issue seems to appear when either large amounts of data or streaming content is received

I can only repeat the previous comment after using 1.0.8.19 for a couple of weeks now. The only thing to add is that it takes (too) long for the apps or the OS to react after the moment from when on there is obviously no data transfer and try to rebuild the connection, which then either succeeds or not. I find this issue very disappointing, I would expect WLAN connection stability and reliability should be on top of the list when prioritizing bugfixes

Cary Grant ( 2014-07-31 13:22:33 +0200 )edit

Yes, this issue has not been resolved at all! Even after the new conman was rolled out in the latest update, I see the dreaded 'Connection Error' all the time. It's a very disappointing experience having to go to the Settings menu to fix this.

Is there a way to reopen the question?
