[OPTION] Time based Message list

I would like an option to have collapsable sections in the mail application message list view, like:
Today's messages (normally expanded) Yesterday This Week This Month Older Messages
The idea is to partition the view into manageable chunks, given the limitations of the list view.
The view could work in a way similar to the contacts application, where you have to click on a letter to expand the list. But in this case, the "letter" could be a full width header, with maybe summary details on the contents (e.g number of messages/number of unread messages)
I think even with a smarter listview (Making use of categories, say, to quickly scroll to a certain section), the division makes sense.

Google's Inbox or Dropbox's Mailbox have a very useful modern UI. Some ideas could and should influence the mail app. The basic ideas of both apps is that you can remove, delay, or archive messages so that the inbox is clear ("zero").
