This is a matter that has for some unknown reason bothered me a good while. It is naming software and hardware. My question for future Jolla devices is this:

Since the whole idea about Jolla is being unlike, shouldn't the name also resemble that?

Instead of naming next Jolla a "Jolla 2" or something similar it should just stay Jolla. I'd like to compare this to cars. Let's say you want to get a Camaro. You have a bunch of different looking Camaros. They are advertised as Camaros but on paper they are Camaro 1957, Camaro 1980 etc. all the way to current day Camaro 2014 is it now?

Same applies to vintage guitars. Anyone into the topic knows differences spec-wise between a '69 and a '72 Fender Stratocaster. For others, they are just discrete numbers or years that identify the model. However, I also like Sailfish OS's codenaming convention with Finnish lakes. I'll upvote still, since I prefer something unlike the utterly dull "Jolla 2" or "J2".

What happens if Jolla releases two phones the same year (one yang size, one yin)?

One option is to have a name and a year...

Two phones? I refer to cars again. Let's take C-series Volvo (not the convertable). There is Kinetic (lite). There is a regular one (can't remember the name). There is then a power-house named R-series (=racing).

They are the same car with a different setup. Still they are sold as [place a year] Volvo C30(?) R. Format: [Year] Jolla [Model] = 2015 Jolla GTI ;)

Jolla 360 ? Or Jolla One? Or Jolla X?

So the next Jolla phone needs to have a name then...

Could the theme be small boats?

My personal suggestion is that Jolla would just stay as Jolla. If model separation is needed then the release year should be used. So the flagship Jolla shoud just stay as a Jolla. On spec sheet it can say "2015 Jolla" or "Jolla 2015".

In short: name the Jolla as it were a car or a classic guitar.

When it comes to lite-models, bigger screens and what not, an added name is in place to separate the models. Since jolla is a small boat the name should have a connection to boats and ships.

I like the idea with different name suffixes. For example Ford Germany has "Trend", "Ambiente" and "Titanium" (sometimes more) to separate the different "classes" of a single model (e. g. Ford Focus 2015 Titanium).

The first four albums by Peter Gabriel have no names. They are differentiated by the cover image, not by release year...

It also has the added advantage of neutralizing the device's history, i.e. Jolla 2015 is the Jolla made in 2015 on par as any other iphone or nexus of 2015
