Run desktop apps on Jolla Tablet

With a big screen, powerful CPU and Linux the tablet is almost like a computer. It would be great if I could connect a bluetooth mouse and keyboard, and be able to use desktop apps on the device!

Traditionally tablets are devices that are meant just for consuming content. This would enable people to also create content. Let's say you're on a long flight or train ride, or you just need to do some last minute changes to a spreadsheet... this would make it possible.

Please add ideas about how to best do it in the comments. Dual boot? Desktop mode? Just some libraries?

For UI apps desktop mode and docking station would be preferred. Depending on the desktop app the 2G RAM won't go too far unfortunately.

Good point on the RAM!

Two votes for docking station already :o What kind of docking station are you thinking about and why? I'm kind of surprised about that. Do you mean like a kickstand or something? An actual dock isn't very mobile...

And a couple of votes for 4G RAM too :)

I've seen various options for docking stations in the past.

  1. An two part docking station, with part one providing the breakout of some interesting ports (e.g. video out, 1xUSB) only which clips onto the tablet directly extending it a bit to the side or the back). So it can be hand held still. Then the 2nd part is setup as a desk stand with a serious port replicator providing NIC, >=3xUSB, video out, power input and heavy enough to provide a solid support (so the tablet isn't moving around due to the cables). In some cases the two parts were sold as two items to maximize profits.
  2. Single docking station which clips to the tablet but covers the whole back extending it by a good part and providing additional ports (might even include and additional battery). It had some fold out part to be used as stand.

When traveling by train or plane I'd probably prefer (2) esp. if an additional battery is included. In case of presentations and for home/office I'd probably prefer (1).

I know it's possible to do this on maemo, at least applications compiled for debian. http://wiki.maemo.org/Easy_Debian
