I'd like to get on board the questions here by saying that a FULL metal body would be a really really nice thing to have. Its why people like apple products so much. It gives the user the feeling of using something very premium.. SAIL ON!

I don't agree. Mobile devices are not made to have metal chassis. First, because metals will show a dent for every time you drop the device on the floor. Second, because metal is heavy. Third and most important, because mobile devices use radio frequency to communicate, and metal stops radio frequency, forcing designers to create workarounds to recover some decent reception/transmission. Polycarbonate is the best material to build such devices: light, flexible, rugged and easily shaped.

If only as a marketing strategy it makes sense. You don't have to wrap the entire device in metal, leave room for antennas etc. Metal is slightly heavier albeit stronger and more premium. Aluminum or magnesium can be easy molded into different shapes.

While you're certainly right about the advantages of Polycarbonate, there are some advantages of metal as well. Metal gets dents faster, that's true, but PC can break. For example my Nokia N8 doesn't have a single dent, while parts of the plastic parts got demolished and look really, really bad. Second there is a huge temperature problem, since PC doesn't transmit heat as well as metal. While it may be uncomfortable, if your device gets hot on the outside, it's way more uncomfortable, of your battery gets fried and looses capacity over time. In the end it's all about personal preference.

Agreed @Tobis4s

Have you ever broken a piece of PC? It's used to build crash helmets...

I'd prefer for at least some metal decorations. Judging from the pictures, this thing has potential to be seriously beautiful device, but it looks like the white sides might benefit from some metal. In any case, it needs attention so that it doesn't look cheap. Premium look and feel with matured Sailfish OS with very aggressive pricing should result in impressive sales figures.

Personally I'd be happy with a polycarbonate "shell", with metal end-plates

Jolla Roadmapping Meeting - Friday 16.01.2015

Thank you for your contribution to the Jolla Tablet project!

We receive a lot of ideas and suggestions, which we are grateful for, but all of them can't be implemented. We've reviewed your idea and unfortunately it is not something we can implement, at least right now.

However, we will keep all suggestions, and might revisit this decision in the future if we see an opportunity to implement this feature-request in an upcoming product/SW release.

Best regards,
The Jolla Tablet Team
