Will the Jolla tablet have a FM transmitter ? ;-)

For a brief background, the good old Nokia N900 has a FM transmitter and users have been very vocally asking for it to be included in any folow-up (N950, N9) or even related device (Jolla smartphone).

Possible use cases:

  • music to car speakers from tablet
  • navigation system directions to car speakers

A FM transmitter would really be awesome! It's one of the main things I love about my N8.

I was just about to post a request for a FM transmitter when I saw your post. Please Jolla. FM transmitter is a must in all future devices! While I am begging... some Nokias were able to maintain a call and a data connection at the same time. Is this offered on any devices currently?

It would really make sense to have FM transmitting functionality. It's utterly simple/cheap technology compared to Bluetooth sound transmission and - even though I wouldn't want to miss Bluetooth - covers mostly the same use cases.

Personally, I see the most value of FM transmission in being able to use any conventional radio (vintage or not) as a remote speaker for the device. There are plenty of them around.

Bluetooth speakers tend to be costly in decent quality, FM transmission might allow people using the tablet with their - maybe high end - stereo they've got at home anyway. Without any adapter stuff.

Jolla Roadmapping Meeting - Friday 16.01.2015

Thank you for your contribution to the Jolla Tablet project!

We receive a lot of ideas and suggestions, which we are grateful for, but all of them can't be implemented. We've reviewed your idea and unfortunately it is not something we can implement, at least right now.

However, we will keep all suggestions, and might revisit this decision in the future if we see an opportunity to implement this feature-request in an upcoming product/SW release.

Best regards,
The Jolla Tablet Team

This is a somewhat general copy / paste answer. Is the hardware FMtx implemented making this a software matter ...or not? I'd think that with the initial tablet launch date already behind us this should be well known.
