One use case for a 7'' tablet is the reading device. Use it for daily reading of news, web pages, books, office docs, comics, whatever.

Today's online documents have also hyper links so there is some mechanism needed to direct swap between different applications, documents and formats and back. Formats including all open ebook standards, like epub, mobi, unlike formats like djvu. A global history is meeded. For on-the-device documents and (optional) online stuff a good search mechanism is needed (together with the global history) to find stuff you read before but forgot where. (this must be privacy save implemented): some internal counter/tracker for history to see how long some document positions are read. They (Amazon?) do it in "the cloud" to customize future books - but it is usefull to find stuff again if you have your own private database.

For me the power reading device would be:

  • having a standardized reading experience for all sources including (text) web pages with some pure text reading mode
  • a reading history for all sources
  • a search engine for internal and external stuff with global history functionality
  • a global note writing mechanism (with history ;-)) - with on-document text marker
  • multimedia support (for epub3 or linked video/audio whatever stuff)
  • posibility to share information to others via xmpp or some social media or device-to-device
  • a good application swapping mechanism to directly hop between documents
  • global speak support (espeak with mbrola voices will do for a start)
  • for the history: a possibility to sync the history with other devices and/or applications. Syncing mechanism would be best with simple files (to store in e.g. owncloud)
    • like other Sailfish phones/tablets
    • (ebooks) using the Calibre api with some python import/export mechanism of the history file on the calibre client host. or talk to Kovid Goyal for a direct supported device api

Having same thoughts as well as currently I want to buy a tablet and a high quality e-reader device as well.

For me reading experience should contain also

  • high quality eink display (black/white, not colors at all)

  • possibility to switch with to "reading" mode i.e battery saving/offline mode

Reading mode or a good reader would be great. However, I would like to see automatic scrolling or word-by-word scrolling for faster/more efficient reading. I guess it is possible to make it ourselves, as it's not really necessary to change any hardware.

For a reader, it is VERY important to be able to turn down the backlight enough, especially in the dark. This is a very annoying issue with many smart phones and tablets and makes it almost impossible to use them for longer reading sessions in dim light.
