No need to write any intro about, hence will we see the (full/partial) port to Jolla tablet?

Just so you know, the system is called SailfishOS and is the same for all devices for now. For emacs, "you don't start emacs you boot it".

If I understand right, emacs can be modular.

Given a bare-minimum functional emacs package, the userspace bells and whistles become issues at the users' discretion, enjoining in turn, minimal additional support.

Of course, emacs might require a **ctrl* vkbd key.

On the website it seems to be a blog. Somebody explained that after losing one of the earliest running backs in the NFL, the Washington Redskins is moving forward to the ancient ones. I compiled emacs and I am occasionally using it inside fingerterm. Usually I use emacs on a desktop and tramp mode to access files stored on my phone via ssh.

Fingerterm seems to not allow all combinations of ctrl/alt/shift with other keys. e.g. ctrl-c works fine, but shift-arrow up doesn't.

I am using org-mode in emacs and at least these keys would be nice: alt-enter, ctrl-enter, shift-arrow, alt-arrow, alt-backspace, ctrl-tab

Wish I could both upvote & downvote Okw's answer.

I agree Emacs as an editor does sound unappealing on a touchscreen - disadvantage of being keyboard-driven. But Emacs isn't primarily for editing text.

The plethora of functionality built on Emacs' text editing is worth having even on a touchscreen, org-mode jumping to mind first among many things.

I'll create a request to make fingerterm more friendly to Emacs.

I know that text editors are a touchy subject to many, so I try to be sensitive.

I personally use Emacs. I love it.

However, I find it hard to believe that it'd be as good on a tablet. The strengths of Emacs for me (and afaik many others) is that it has a very extensive keyboard functionality. No need to use the rodent while in a programming flow. On a tablet I don't really see the motivation for using Emacs. I would prefer something touchscreen oriented than keyboard oriented on a device with no keyboard.

Sidenote: If you'd equip the tablet with a usb-otg or Bluetooth keyboard, you could run emacs-nox from a regular terminal.

That means emacs(-nox) is already available, isn't it?

Hence, I got my answer ;-) D.

@d4v1d3, Yes, emacs-nox is a part of Emacs. It's just with no graphical interface (nox as in no X). I'm not sure if anyone has installed it on Sailfish, but should be just a matter of compiling it. Linking it to appropriate libraries in the SDK might be somewhat tricky, but doable.

To be kept in mind.

Using Emacs as a remote editor from the desktop into Jolla through ssh. tramp (an Emacs add-on) ist our friend.

e.g. for opening fstab on Jolla, using the keyboard:

 C-x C-f /ssh:nemo@Sailfish:/etc/fstab

(In Emacs conventions: holding <ctl> hit x then f, etc.)</ctl>

  • You have the full power of Emacs, with native keyboard, mouse etc.
  • You do not need to everload the memory of Jolla with a huge package, while your desktop carries the load.

Editing as root is also possible, using sudo. So for really editing fstab:

C-x C-f /ssh:nemo@Sailfish|sudo:nemo@Sailfish:/etc/fstab

But: alas, with Jolla-1 from Ubuntu 14.04 I get into a bug: "Tramp: Opening connection for nemo@Sailfish using sudo...failed". (BUG!)

But I am not giving up! With Emacs I have administered Unix at work since '94. A lot of infrastructure has grown here.

How can I label this answer with "bug"?

If you want to report a bug you'd just open a new question, I'd say. :)
