Because the company were not organised enough or forward thinking enough to realise that when a phone can't last 24 hours after sending a few messages, taking a few calls, browsing the net a little or maybe playing a game that when inevitably the poor capacity battery that came with it ran down, people might actually NEED more than one battery to get through a day.
If you leave the phone on a table all day and do nothing with it, battery life is great, other than that it's f-ing terrible, it's all well and good harping on about how wonderful the OS is and how optimized it is, but the hardware falls WAY WAY short on using the phone as an every-day phone when you compare it with other brands that out-strip the battery life by DAYS,
I have a friend with a LG G3, his battery lasts an embarrassingly long time compared to a Jolla, and he's on it constantly. If I go on a long fishing trip, I need to take a 12,000ma power bank with me to charge the phone up if I'm not near a power source for a couple of days. I'm a linux enthusiast, I really love SailfishOS, but if I replace this Jolla phone, it will be to flash it with SailfishOS and get back to better hardware with decent battery life, cos' there's no point
sticking with hardware that you can't get support for, and for that reason, that's why I won't be investing in a tablet, and that's just the truth, plain & simple :|
My guess: Jolla needs to order large quantity of those from the manufacturer but they don't want to stock them for long because they have money locked in the stock and also batteries cannot be stored forever (they wear out even when not used, and the next Jolla phone might use different kind of battery). Thus it is about optimizing the stock to the demand that they don't know.
Pre-order campaign with threshold might be a good idea to propose to Jolla.
penpen ( 2014-12-15 22:42:38 +0200 )edit@penpen, crowdfunding spare batteries? Sounds silly, but infact not a bad idea at all!
Okw ( 2014-12-15 23:01:18 +0200 )editCrowdfunding for batteries would be the solution!
Guillaume L. ( 2014-12-16 10:41:24 +0200 )editSee update at https://together.jolla.com/question/69955/official-announcement-batteries-available-tuesday-9th-of-december-2014-1200-utc/
"UPDATE: Closing this post since the first battery batch has been sold out. We will announce again whenever a new batch is available. Thanks for your patience!"
So it seems Jolla is going to offer a second batch later.
penpen ( 2014-12-16 14:20:45 +0200 )edit@penpen it still doesn't answer my original question. It would be nice to get some concrete info about availability. First batch was really tiny and it was sold out in hours.
