where are the ambience images stored? i.e. where do I put my custom images so that they appear under Ambiences?

You can pick any image of your gallery for a ambience by taping the Picture, drag the pulley menu down and "create ambience". than this Picture appears in the gallery under "ambience". click on this and you can mark it as a favorite by taping at the star. than you can access this ambience with the right swipe on your locked- or your homescreen.

i hope this was what you mean.

so that means it "labels" the chosen custom picture as ambience or does it make a duplicate? I actually ment the physical location (i.e. where / in which directory do I find the preset ambience images)

I think it doesn't makle a duplicate. because if you delete the picture from gallery, the ambience of this picture is also deleted. but i cant say that for sure.
