[rant] Good bye Jolla, good bye SFOS and good bye native TextSecure [not a question]
I'm really so disappointed and frustrated. I came to Jolla because I searched for freedom. i was blended by their marketing and the positive comments in press and blogs. But directly after I received my phone, and I gave away my iPhone I discovered that Jolla isn't FOSS - yes it have open and free parts, but in the complete it isn't. Yes SFOS and Jolla have some nice ideas, and I would take the lack of comfort you have with a Jolla right now, but only if i had the freedom I was searching for. I was on the way to implement TextSecure (aldislamp) for SFOS, and for that I bought a second Jolla Phone, one for daily use, the other for development. Also I perked a Tablet, because I thought at the end it will become all FOSS. But I think I was tricking my self. I was thinking about Jolla and not free already from the beginning, looks like there are not so many alternatives, Apple and Google are bad, BB not better. But a Firefox phone looks to have at the first glance to have (at least more) freedom, Android as AOSP or Cyanogenmod is defenitly more free. The only problem is support here the bad companies with buying their hardware. Now everything I have is Jolla hardware, which is very expensive if you took the hardware aside from the Rest. And I don't know where to go. At the moment I try to figure out how to get nemo or Plasma Active running on my Jolla devices, because I don't want throw another time money away I did with Apple. But I regret I bought Jolla. If I had known everything I know today I had probably bought an old N900 or had kept my SGS3 I never used to put CM11 on it. Or mybe even I had gone a step further and had drop a phone completely. Now it's done. But yesterday happened here something which also made me angry and took me to decide to no more support SFOS with my native TextSecure implementation. For me it is incredible (https://together.jolla.com/question/74432/bug-notification-screen-to-device-lock-prompt-to-home-screen/) how people here put something like the right answer for you, which is for yourself obvious not the right answer. The people tell you, it's a feature not a bug - because it's in the release notes. If you can use something not in the right way, for me it's a bug. And I can not understand how the people think they can decide for you what is okay and what not. I felt this bad not even with Apple like I felt yesterday. Probably I will get here also the answer, that is supposed to be in this way. Okay, for me not: good bye!
PS: If somebody makes me a good offer, I have to Jolla Phones and a coming Tablet to sell. I will never ever buy an Jolla except it will be complete FOSS - and I'm in the meanwhile sure it will never happen. If I end up with nemo I will continue on native TextSecure, but for nemo with the UI for nemo.
So you want secure text, but you have a problem with a privacy feature that avoids that random people who pick up your phone can access your notifications and eventually read part of your communication? Otoh AOSP, cyanogenmod and Firefox are not really more free than SFOS. Still same binary driver blobs, and many closed apps also. Also the N900 you mention has no open UI code. Anyway good luck with your search for something that suits you.
Philippe De Swert ( 2015-01-05 12:39:42 +0200 )edit@DiosDelRayo - It actually makes me bit sad that my answer led to this rant. You have to understand that TJC is driven by community. I, as an user, felt that it is perhaps working as intended and few others supported it as well. Now if you feel the inputs are not correct / as per your expectation, then you should probably wait for others from community to respond and see if they concur with you. The other discussion is still open and the answer I posted is not the ultimate viewpoint.
anandrkris ( 2015-01-05 12:47:46 +0200 )edit@DiosDelRayo I don't understand why you are so angry about your linked bug report? The answer on your bug report was just an note from an ordinary community member who was trying to help you out to understand why it is CURRENTLY solved on this way. Every community member is able to give an answer and noone says that this particular answer is the correct one. There was also no Jolla employee who said that your bug report/feauture request won't be implemented (Philippe just gave you an other hint about security reseasons)... Jolla is a small company and they are able to change the system quite fast and this community is able to influence (IMO the only company i know who works such great together with their community) to become Sailfish a perfect OS. So please take a deep breath and there will change a lot of things in future that will suites you - and I am sure this bug you reported will be fixed/ enhanced in future also so there is no reason going mad. :)
Alex ( 2015-01-05 12:58:32 +0200 )editI wonder which part of SFOS is so closed it hinders @DiosDelRayo to implement TextSecure?
