Maybe I was unclear.
If your network connection is provided by WLAN, you see the "standard" piece of pie symbol with signal strength indicator:

If your network connection is provided by cellular network, you see the up/down symbol that shows data transfer direction:

If you have both wlan and mobile data disabled, then there is no symbol in that location.
I think Android works in a similar way; mobile data is shown by updown arrows and if wlan is used it replaces the mobile data symbol with the signal strength pie.
You can find more accurate symbols and explanations from:

Normally the icon visible on the lock screen and during peeking should indicate this: if it shows a Wi-Fi icon, it's connected to Wi-Fi, if it shows two arrows pointing up and down, it's connected to the mobile network (or busy connecting).

hongakonga ( 2015-01-09 20:34:30 +0200 )editIf you are connected with WIFI, then there's that wifi symbol. If you are connected through cellular network, WIFI symbol is replaced with up/down arrows. How is that confusing?

But to be honest, I don't find them more intuitive. They are not really similare to the typical WiFi symbol.
