Audibility dependent on phone position?

Something strange which I have been experiencing for a long time - maybe someone can explain:

Generally I have no problems with audibility - that is people don't complain about not being able to hear me when I phone them with my Jolla. But only when I use the phone lying down there are regular complaints. It seems when I hold the phone upside down while using it, people can hardly hear me. I checked: changing the position of the phone while talking did improve the connection. Any ideas?

Do you mean the connection quality or the audio quality? The former depends on your radio reception which is supposed to be isotropic. If it isn't, then there is indeed a serious problem.

The latter may just be a case of covering your microphone when holding your phone in a certain way.

@pichlo: must be the audio quality of course. and what's more: the sound degradation always happens on the other side, never on my side - I have not problem understanding them complaining that they don't understand me ...

But ofc, if u keep the phone upside-down the microphne is not where u speak but at your ear - no wonder the audio (volume / quality) is worse.

when I lie, the speaker is still where my ear is and the microphone still near my mouth. anything else would be quite strange, don't you think??

Erm, he's also upside down, not only the phone.

When I go to lay down, I'm usually in horizontal position not upside-down.. But, when u lay down and you (and your phone) end up upside-down then u must be a bat (and are hanging down from the roof).. !? :)

@jjaone: The way I got it was that he experienced problems while laying down. For testing purposes, he then took it to the next level and tried it with his head upside-down. But maybe @stephan can explain himself...

It really sounds like the microphone position is making the difference. The connection quality might be varying somewhat depending on your head's and hand's position with respect to the radio posts, and certain fruit-logoed manufacturers have had to admit that being a real problem with their devices in the past. But as long as the people on the other side can hear your voice somehow, I would not suspect that to be a problem with your Jolla.

It might be a different story if you have real gaps in the voice stream or audio glitches, etc.

It sounds like its the noise cancelling that kicks in. It uses a second microphone to cancel out noise, so if your voice is accidentaly registered as noise, you get a problem.

It should be easy enough to test by covering the second microphone.

@stoffix, that's a good hint! maybe I cover the second mic unconsciously when I hold the phone upside down. As the microphone is located at the top this really could be the case. Gonna test it next time!
