[Feature request] Hardware upgrade like Neo900
Hello!
It would be great for future to upgrade the Jolla phone not by buying new one, but just by replacing system board to board with modern components like Neo900. Thanks!
We have moved to a new Sailfish OS Forum. Please start new discussions there.
Hello!

I prefer a new phone because this would not allow to change certain components. Also if too much is replaced, customers are scared away by the complexity of getting an up-to-date-phone.
For example: I want an OLED display for my next phone. Would that mean I have to buy a Jolla 1, a replacement board to have current hardware specs and an OLED display upgrade?
Of course it would be great if Sailfish OS would run on Project Ara, but that is another topic.
Yes, but I think it depends on the cost. If Jolla 2 will cost 400€ and new motherboard 150€ - I will choose a new motherboard if possible. In any case, it would be a good opportunity.

Jolla tries a healthy path between market and foss "doctrin". There is a certain overlap in potential users but as you can see in the replacement battery topic, there is not much capacity on jollas side to run "special projects". Only the unlike case Jolla Phone 2 being an exact copy in many aspects of Jolla Phone 1 would make exchange of the whole pcbs possible... cross your fingers ;) But judging from the current casings durability, i will be searching for a new caseing for jolla one pcb not a new pcb for the wracked casing in 2 years from now :P

The estimated price of the Neo900 is essentially the same as that of the N900 when it first came out, i.e. 500+€ rather than 150€. I don't see why a hardware upgrade for Jolla would be any cheaper. For the N900, the upgrade sort of makes sense given that it has hardware features no longer found on the market (physical QWERTY, resistive touch screen) and a very compact form factor. With all due respect, Jolla doesn't seem to have similar hardware advantages in comparison to other phones on the market. Jolla is special because of its OS, not really because of the hardware.

Which elegant design makes it unfashionable. Thus a dual Strategy based on a NEW Jolla S, (as for the S upgrade in the Iphone Line) along with an Neo900 motherboard on sale on Jollashop would sound for me. It would allows the advent of a true Next Jolla in the Phablet range based on the tablet chipset allowing to get a true range of product : Jolla S or Neo 900 upgrade Jolla Plus Jolla Tablet
