Fix the Askbot search functionality and enable search in questions and answers in together.jolla.com, preferably fuzzy search. Was looking for https://together.jolla.com/question/2488/pressing-enter-in-the-search-box but not knowing the heading but knowing that the question was about url encoding didn't help.

Searching for text is pretty much broken fully stop, as the search terms are url encoded (it becomes obvious if your search term includes a space, such as google account. If you then click on the "magnifying glass" search button twice the search term is re-encoded multiple times. Hilarious.

Searching by tag is also broken.

Early days, but the search functionality is in dire need of fixing if there is to be any hope of keeping a lid on duplicates.

Thanks @Milhouse of the status info of Askbot's search.. sounds really bad, and the amount of duplicates, overlapping questions etc are rapidly increasing.. Needs a really quick fix, otherwise the signal/noice ratio is getting very low, indeed.. :P

yes, the search omits important parts - no help when the question text body or comments are not searched, thus duplicate questions cannot be avoided...

The URL encoding issue was fixed and the search should work now. I'm not sure how "fuzzy" it is, but should cover most of the stuff now.

Askbot also has support for the Haystack search engine backends, and we might enable that in the future, if it seems useful.

It's not fuzzy as a search for "urlencodes" does not return any results, even though that word is present (in a string) in the question linked in original question. It does search question and answer, but not comment unfortunately. Maybe that comes later?

The "dropdown search", ajaxy stuff roughly returns half as many results as a regular search. I've tried to sum some of the search issues up in https://together.jolla.com/question/10452/how-can-we-easiest-avoid-duplicate-questions/ as I hadn't seen this Q/A (sic!)

Probably because I searched for duplicate, so I'll add that tag to this question.

@Keto I assume you have made a fork of askbot(?) as their github repo seems awfully quite. Wouldn't it be an idea to make it a public repo where people can make pull/merge requests?

Tanghus ( 2014-01-05 06:39:10 +0200 )edit

@Tanghus together.j.c Askbot is very close to what is in the upstream repository tagged as version 0.7.49. So, for now I would recommend to contribute fixes directly to upstream. If t.j.c starts to drift apart or upstream doesn't seem responsive enough, then we'll definitely consider moving it to public repository.

God to know, thanks
