Is there any clue when it will be released?

My actual smartphone is kind of broken and I am not sure, if I should wait for the next generation Jolla smartphone or should I pick the first generation? I am willed to wait about 3-4 months... What shall I do?!

-- Warning, Pure Speculation Within --

In the latest update release notes here, we see a reference to a 'Jolla 1'

Jolla 1: Pick your favorite settings shortcuts to be shown in the Events view

Perhaps this is an indication of a Jolla 2 being in development? Why have the number otherwise?

Given the limitations of a company with ~100 employees and the fact that nothing whatsoever has been emerged on a new Jolla Phone I'd suggest it's a little farther away than a mere 3-4 months. Also, the openness around the tablet development suggests that users would learn early of a new device (first Jolla phone was announced ~8 months before delivery, the tablet was announced almost 7 months before its targeted release date). Hence 3-4 months seem unrealistic.

I'd recommend going for a Jolla Phone 1, or to settle for the Tablet for trying the Jolla experience. Note that the specs of the phone are a little outdated though, so it really boils down to how much it would hurt you financially to spend the €250.-.

I would like them (Jolla) to upgrade the phone incrementally. I'm content with the design and feel of the Jolla, it would suffice if they would upgrade screen, processor, memory bit by bit. Keep the form factor.

There is one 10 month old post http://reviewjolla.blogspot.se/2014/06/translated-article-jolla-boss-big-news.html

"He did not want to reveal the next phone model’s release date.

  • Not later than next year, he says. "

When its ready. :P

On a serious note i'd expect it after summer and maybe christmas.

You can try to find a used one on ebay if you need one for cheap.

No there is no release date yet for Jolla Phone 2. At the moment Jolla focuses on Sailfish OS 2.0 and the Tablet which IMO will be top priority until at least this fall. It wouldn't be a good marketing decision to announce a new phone before the tablet is being sold officially...

So I don't expect an announcement earlier than towards the end of this year and certainly no new phone in 2015... Thus it is still worth to buy the Jolla phone, which with Sailfish OS 2.0 will feel like a new device again (ok let's ignore the HW specs).

Since the HW side of the tablet is long finished i believe there are people looking into the Jolla 2.

The software adaptation can wait.

"i believe there are people looking into the Jolla 2" - yes I'm pretty sure of that.

i actually think @caprico is correct. if you look at the bigger picture, it makes more sense to focus on Sailfish OS 2.0. the changes in 2.0 tells you that it expands the flexibility of the OS to support more hardware in the future. i'll hazard a guess that once 2.0 is out and the tablet is released, they will then refocus their efforts on a v2 Jolla Phone.

Jolla announced during MWC 2015 in Barcelona a patnerships with Intel on next Atom X3 processor. Of note, the Intel Atom X3 Chip including LTE modem will be released during the second semester, at variance with 3G only model, which will be commercialized during Q2. http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20150408PR205.html It's seem to get already more than 40 designs on progress...

Theses facts combined with Jolla's own charged planning (tablet And Sailfish OS 2.0 release) in June, suggest probably, that the Next Jolla could not appear before Fall ...

I still have doubts if atoms will ever rival arms on mobile devices...

The real advantage would be if they offer pure linux drivers and not android stuff.

ApB ( 2015-04-10 16:29:00 +0300 )edit

Jolla could still show a prototype (or two) on Jolla Love Day.

vattuvarg ( 2015-04-11 11:00:48 +0300 )edit

Effectively Jolla Love Day in May could be a good time to announce something as a third run on indiego to crownfound a Next Jolla with a delivery around Oct-November (if we assume same delay as for the Tablet) : at this time both tablet and Sailfish 2.0 potentially bugs will be behind and the atom X3 with LTE available.

Crowdfunding the tablet was a nice experiment (marketing wise, hype the company, SFOS etc) but IMO the next phone should be a more "formal" release. Get it ready > release.

Think this is probably your best bet, I'm seriously considering buying it if Sailfish OS is a success...
