It is very very inconvenient that you can not casually access the play store. I was on an exibit last week, just for two hour or so and a lady approached me for an app that alerts you to social media contacts who are also on the exibit. You could scan a card and download it on the spot. Not mee with my Jolla. Bummer!

We really need an easy way to access the play store, this is a let-down! Very inconvenient and frustrating that you can not easily download from the number one place where people publish their Android Apps.

It all boils down to one decision you have to make: Do you want easy access to Google's services or do you want a (relatively) free phone? If it's OK for you to accept Google's offerings, why not buy a real Android phone in the first place?

And while you are hacking yourself into installing google play on your jolla (it is easy, trust me!) you should also consider to change your gravatar from the randomly generated swastika one can make out when staring on it to long to something individual :P Can be done here: gravatar.com

@mosen - <off-topic> I have to point out that the gravatar is a mirrored swastika and not the way it should be. Nevertheless, I really appreciate you pointing that out. Find it funny when The Internets gets all politially incorrect - by random generator. :D </off-topic>

Since the Android apps are run in a sandbox environment, and after the latest updates restricted quite a lot, does this apply to the Google Play also? Or is this an exception, because you hack it to the device? Just wondering, because now the apps (at least I've understood it so) can't send much data out, so how could GP, after all it's run by the same alien?

Today an other example: we hava a national holliday here, lots of festivities in towns across the country. And there is an app for that, in the Google play store and in the Apple store. With all the scedules, artists etc. only relevant for today.

You need an Android phone for that :) Jolla does not officially support Play services or Play store, but shared by the community, the installation guide can be found here. Also, you could use 3rd party services to download apk files from the Play store, and then install them into your Jolla. Community shares one service here as well

I fully understand that a Linux system administrator can do anything with this phone, I an asking for an easy way.

@FJVA The link in @simo's answer may look frightenning to a new person, but if you read it carefully, there's nothing difficult. I'm not a sys admin or Linux developer, not even Linux user (except for 5 month of Jolla phone), but it took me less then 10 minutes to install Google Play. You don't need to have any special knowledges to make it work.

That 3rd party service is the easiest way available for apps in Play store... If not easy enough, you really need an Android phone :/

Just to make sure, you have probably noted that most of the apps are also available in other Android stores like Aptoide? (You can Install these other stores using your phone, via Jolla Store > Marketplaces)

@simo Certainly, I use the Amazon app store normally. Have also used Aptoid and Yandex. The point is that in a lot of cases apps don't make it to these other stores.

Please note that 3rd party services or alternative app sites do not necessarily offer the same APK as the one officially maintained by its creator (which is usually only available at Play, unfortunately). Chances are you will get malware bundled with your app, that's why I am very careful with apps from 3rd parties. Just saying. Email the creators and ask them for the APK, make them aware that not everyone has or wants access to Google Play and that the only alternative would be to download from unofficial resources.

To my knowledge it is not possible to offically support and provide Google Play Store and Services, there are some copyright, licence issues and Google do not support offical 3rd party access from non android unless licence fees are payed from manufacturer (example: BB)

But this is, i heared / think and without any guarantee

It's not only a financial issue (=paying license fees). Google will allow access to their store (and the other services) only if the handset manufacturer uses their (mostly proprietary) version of Android. If you use any other version (such as Alien Dalvik), you may not legally access the Play Store.

You can always use semi-trusted 3rd party apk downloaders like http://apps.evozi.com/apk-downloader/ (this is referred by an IT-Magazine website) to download apks. No need to install Play and gServices if you do not need them. (gServices is probably the main reason why Jolla does not support Play in the first place, second is maybe that you need a contract to distribute gapps commercially!)

which version? I'm actually running fine with 6.3.2... Did you restart the device or the alien dalvik?, if not I would hardly recommend ;)

Yes that works.

So what do you think? ;-)

Just an other store, not like it is a mirror site of the play store is it? I have already got 3 stores on my phone, now I have 4.

Now i know what you mean. It is not the install or support of Google Play at all. It´s the behavier of installed apps (links to google playstore are directed to native browser and there mobile webpage not to store directly).

Example:

If you scan QR inside android scanner (or you click on advertising) it redirectes to a link (app inside google playstore) and opens system default brower instead Google Playstore App.

But there is no other default behavier to be expected, Jolla didn´t know how to handle links like this, the pointing to any installed store must be indeed implemented into the native browser.

"maybe that you need a contract to distribute gapps commercially!)" is the closing of my answer... don't worry, as long as readers get it everything should be fine - just edit your answer instead answering a second time

Ok, i´ll do this next time. I opened 2 answers, because it was too different to merge in one answer
