As Facebook has dropped support for its API it would be good for Sailfish to integrate Wire messenger to its core.

Is this the same WIRE.COM messenger app (available for Android, iOS and Windows)? There is possible to download .apk file (for Android 4.2 or above) directly from https://wire.com/download/ but Sailfish OS 2.0 (Taalojärvi) gives error message "There was a problem while parsing the package." by installing it.

It would be great if at least the APK could be installed!

Wire is simply the best video-, audio- and text-chat software with end-to-end-encryption. It really belongs on Sailfish.

I use the Android app of wire on my Sailfish Aqua Fish and it works fine.

@jsommer It is not working for everyone. Have you seen this thread: https://together.jolla.com/question/167234/android-messenger-wire-no-pictures/ I have followed this up as far as my expertise allows, and it looks like the problem is that Wire needs one of the following protocols available for complete functionality, neither of which is available by default under Alien Dalvik (they both need Google Play Services):

Do remote media (shared images/video, avatars, web link previews) work for you? If so, can you think of anything that you did to make it work, such as installing Google Play Services or the NextCloud client?

I think that it would be great to have proper native support for Wire on SFOS, but failing that getting the Android app working for everyone would be good.

As Wire was released ad open source (link), it shouldn't be a big challenge to port it.

as long as one would do it.

there is a linux app released yesterday! I tried the .apk today and it worked but would be better if there would be a native app.

petros ( 2016-10-12 11:37:15 +0200 )edit

I just tried the .apk again but still get the parsing error :(

shandon ( 2016-10-12 23:05:14 +0200 )edit

petros can you say how you got the .apk to work?

shandon ( 2016-10-22 14:48:21 +0200 )edit

I use version 2.11.254 from 1mobilemarket where I usually get my android stuff and it did install with no issues. I am using it daily with a friend making video calls.I am on aquafish with build 2.0.2.51 if this is of any importance.

Wire is available in Aptoide, but only for SailfishX, for the Xperia. That is really good news for Wire is a good chat/video call service. Much better and safer than Skype!

they still have to prove that as they are investmen funded and still there is no roadmap of how the service will finance. and investors dont put money into it for goodwill. also it is not decentralised - planned - but future will show. anyway i agree it is a service to look after along with matrix/riot, delta chat and in some user cases briar. but as it is well funded in comparison to other projects they should provide a native sailfish solution like they already do for other os- and no dalvik or similar halfbaked.

kaktux ( 2017-12-08 23:10:30 +0200 )edit

@kaktux, all good points, but Wire have made a credible statement about users' privacy.

As for federated alternatives (such as XMPP and Matrix), they are all fine, but for non-techies used to WhatsApp they are waytoo complicated to set up. This is discussed in the XMPP context here: https://xmpp.org/2017/08/easy-xmpp-the-challenges/ . Matrix may be the future, but AFAIK the only non-alpha app available at the moment is Riot.im, which would also leave most non-techies that I know completely confused.

These are not fundamental problems of course, and could be solved in time, but Wire's app hits that sweet spot between usability and functionality right now. I fully agree with Kea that a working SFOS Wire app would be well worth having. However the Wire developers cannot be expected to port their app to SFOS for the sake of a few dozen enthusiasts: they would need to see interest from a lot of people first (or maybe they would do it for a bounty).

Is a Matrix App for Android working with Alien Davlik? What’s about Telegram. It becomes more and more popular and has the potential of a secure Whats App alternative.

jsommer ( 2018-01-29 19:33:58 +0200 )edit

@jsommer I have just started looking into Riot.im, it looks good so far but I have a suspicion that it is consuming a lot of data in the background. Matrix looks like the future to me, especially after yesterday's announcement about $5M in funding: https://matrix.org/blog/2018/01/29/status-partners-up-with-new-vector-fueling-decentralised-comms-and-the-matrix-ecosystem/

I wonder if the Tensor or Quaternion clients could be ported to Sailfish OS (they use QML and Qt5 respectively)

pakman ( 2018-01-30 16:18:30 +0200 )edit

Is the approach similar to uTox? There is a native SailfishOS app in the Harbour Store. Unfortunately this version only supports text messaging. Have you tested any Matrix Android App on SailfishOS with Alien Dalvik? The problem is, that we need an easy to install, modern client for text, audio and video chat including group chats and screen sharing. I can understand that people are frustrated to have an account for multiple clients. In business each customer, vendor or partner prefers another platform, Skype, Skype for Business, GoToMeeting, Hangouts, Wire, Facetime, WhatsApp and whatever is available. Maybe Telegram has a chance. Has someone experience with Telegram on SailfishOS? They will raise more than a billion USD to become the next internet platform.
